Stop the next escape first, then work out what is driving each dog to get out. Check every fence, gate, door and window; supervise outdoor time; and put the dogs behind a closed door or barrier before opening an exterior door. Until the yard and recall are reliable, use a lead or long line outside. Each dog may have a different trigger or escape route, so a single fix may not protect all three.
Prevent another escape before investigating the cause
For now, treat every exit as a potential escape route. Walk the property and inspect fence lines, gates, doors and windows for openings, loose latches or damage. Supervise yard time; if a boundary is not secure, keep the dogs on lead or long line outdoors, or use a secure enclosed area. Before opening an exterior door, place the dogs in a separate room or behind a closed barrier.

Check walking collars, harnesses and leads for wear and correct fit before each outing. These steps reduce immediate opportunities to get loose while you identify why each dog is trying to leave. Work out how and why each dog gets out
“Escaping” can describe different problems: a dog may bolt through an open door, slip out of a harness on a walk, squeeze through a gap, dig underneath a fence, climb or jump over it, or run away when frightened. Dogs Trust advises identifying both the trigger and the route. Observe each dog separately where possible, and note what happened immediately before an attempt and where the dog went.

Fear or noise
Loud or frightening sounds can prompt a dog to flee. Secure the dog indoors when you anticipate a trigger, check that doors and windows are closed, and avoid relying on a yard as a safe place during a frightening event.
Boredom or unmet needs
A predictable routine can help a dog settle. Provide exercise appropriate to that dog’s age, health and size, enjoyable activities, comfortable rest, and access to food and water. If boredom appears to be a trigger, toys, training or food puzzles may add useful activity. Enrichment is not a substitute for secure containment and will not, by itself, address fear or separation-related distress.

Separation-related distress
If escape attempts happen when a dog is left alone, treat that pattern as a possible sign of distress rather than simply a fence problem. Arrange a secure, supervised setup and seek individualized advice from a qualified trainer or veterinary behavior professional if the behavior continues.
Door bolting or unreliable recall
Keep the dogs behind a closed interior door or barrier when an exterior door is being opened. Practice recall in a controlled, secure area; until it is dependable, use a lead or long line outdoors and allow off-lead time only in a secure enclosure. Dogs Trust covers recall and door-bolting prevention in its guidance on stopping dogs escaping or running away.

Match the boundary to the escape route
A fence must prevent the particular dog from getting over, under or through it. Check for digging spots, gaps, climbable objects near the fence, weak panels and gates that do not latch securely. Repair the route being used rather than assuming one fence change will solve every dog’s behavior.
Agriculture Victoria’s private-keeping code gives a 1.8-metre fence as a starting example, with an inward overhang as an option where that height is insufficient. For dogs that dig or escape beneath a boundary, it describes concrete footings or buried wire. These are Victorian recommendations, not a universal building specification; property conditions, the dogs’ behavior and local rules matter. Make the routine workable for three dogs
Three dogs need a household plan that does not depend on one person catching every dash to the door. Agree who is responsible for supervising them outside, and make the door routine consistent: secure the dogs behind a closed door or barrier before anyone opens an exterior door. Keep leads and properly fitted equipment ready for supervised outings.

Dogs in the same home also need compatible arrangements. Agriculture Victoria advises that dogs housed together should be socially compatible, with each dog having its own sleeping area and food bowl; it recommends introducing a new dog slowly and under supervision. Those are general welfare recommendations, not evidence about how any particular group of three dogs will get along. If the dogs are newly living together, observe their interactions and provide separate resources rather than assuming they will share comfortably.
If one of the dogs gets loose
Do not chase the dog, shout harshly or tell it off when it returns. Dogs Trust warns that these responses can frighten a dog or encourage it to run farther. Focus on keeping the other dogs secure, calmly encouraging the loose dog to come back, and making the route it used safer before the next outing.
When to get individualized help
Ask a qualified dog trainer or veterinary behavior professional for help if attempts persist, a dog is breaking through barriers, or fear or separation-related distress may be involved. A property-specific fence professional can assess a boundary that a dog is climbing, jumping or digging through. A single universal fence height or product recommendation cannot be determined without knowing the property and each dog’s behavior.

In the UK, the government code of practice for the welfare of dogs is practical guidance related to section 9 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006; breach of the code alone is not an offence, although a court may consider compliance in relevant proceedings. UK government dog-control guidance lists measures such as fixing a fence or keeping a dog on a lead in enforcement contexts. Check the requirements that apply where you live.
