Well-designed fishing closures can protect habitats and give depleted stocks room to recover; fish farming can supply food without directly adding to wild catches. Both depend on where and how they are managed. Aquaculture now produces more aquatic animals globally than capture fisheries, but that production figure says nothing by itself about environmental impact.
What the latest global figures say
Two recent FAO assessments describe the state of wild fisheries from different angles. In its 2025 review of 2,570 marine fish stocks, FAO classified 64.5% of stocks as exploited within biologically sustainable levels and 35.5% as overfished. Weighted by production, however, 77.2% of global fisheries landings came from biologically sustainable stocks. The stock-count and landings percentages have different denominators; neither should be substituted for the other. (FAO’s 2025 assessment)

FAO’s 2026 report gives a separate, later landings measure: 72.6% of all landings originated from biologically sustainable stocks in 2023. That is not a revision of the 64.5% stock-count estimate. (FAO’s 2026 SOFIA release)
The same 2026 release reports that aquaculture produced 103 million tonnes of aquatic animals in 2024, or 53% of total aquatic-animal production; capture fisheries produced about 92 million tonnes. These are measures of production volume, not a ranking of sustainability. Farmed and wild-caught foods differ widely in their environmental effects, and the global totals do not settle which is preferable in a particular case.

Do fishing closures help populations recover?
A closure, including a fisheries-restricted area, limits some or all fishing activity in a defined place. Depending on its rules and purpose, it may protect vulnerable ecosystems, important habitat, or fish and shellfish at a sensitive stage of their life cycle. It is a management measure, not a guarantee: results depend on whether the protected area is ecologically well chosen, whether restrictions are followed and enforced, and what happens to fishing effort displaced from the closed area.
Regional figures show improvement alongside closures and other management, but do not isolate the effect of closures alone. In the Mediterranean and Black Sea, FAO’s General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) reports that fishing pressure fell by 50% and assessed commercial-species biomass rose by 25% between 2013 and 2023. Across that period, the region adopted 11 management plans and 11 fisheries-restricted areas. The report attributes progress to this broader package of action, not to closures by themselves. - Fish Tank & Seed Sprouter: The fish waste fertilizes the plants, and the plants clean the water for fish.
- Self Cleaning System: Plants consume fish dung as nutrients, so the tank requires 50% fewer cleanings than traditional fish tanks.
- Siphon Oxygen Supply: The water level of the tank is tidal-like fluctuation, and the roots of the plants can breathe regularly, no need watering or fertilizing. Meanwhile a natural oxygen supply is brought to the fish.
- Educational Product: Use the system at home or in a classroom. Let kids learn germination and teach concepts like food sustainability, aquatic environments, and animal care.
- Great Gift: A wonderful gift for kids, parents, teachers, foodies and gardening lovers. (Note: Search B08BR8H72X for the pump spare parts.)
Recovery is also incomplete. GFCM says 52% of assessed Mediterranean and Black Sea stocks were still overexploited in 2023, although this was the lowest level in its time series. The organization also points to continuing environmental and data challenges. Its account notes a new southern Adriatic restricted area intended to protect vulnerable marine ecosystems and crustacean habitat.

FAO’s 2025 global assessment reports that 35.1% of stocks in FAO Area 37 were biologically sustainable. GFCM’s 2025 report says 52% of assessed Mediterranean and Black Sea stocks were overexploited in 2023. These figures come from separate assessments with different descriptions and should not be combined or treated as opposite readings of one identical statistic. The regional label, assessment, year, and denominator matter whenever stock percentages are compared.

When can fish farming be a better alternative?
Farmed production can add food without directly increasing wild capture of the farmed animals. Whether it reduces pressure on wild stocks depends in part on the species and production system: some farms use wild-caught fish or other wild inputs for feed, so farmed output does not automatically mean less fishing overall. A fair comparison also has to account for habitat, water quality, disease, escapes, pollution, energy and other inputs, climate exposure, traceability, and effects on local livelihoods.
There is no single global lifecycle comparison that makes all farmed aquatic foods directly comparable with all wild-caught ones. A well-sited, monitored farm and a poorly managed farm can have very different impacts, just as fisheries differ by stock, gear, location, and management. Global tonnage alone cannot tell a consumer whether one product is the lower-impact choice.

The Mediterranean and Black Sea illustrate both the scale and the trade-offs. GFCM reports that marine and brackish-water aquaculture there produced 940,000 tonnes worth about USD 5.2 billion in 2023. It also identifies heatwaves, disease outbreaks, non-indigenous species, and licensing or monitoring limitations as concerns. These findings describe a specific region and production sector, not every fish farm worldwide. (GFCM’s 2025 highlights)
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to judge the two approaches
- Wild-stock pressure: For a closure, ask which stock or habitat it protects and whether rules cover the fishing activity causing the pressure. For a farm, consider whether feed or other inputs rely on wild-caught fish.
- Habitat and biodiversity: Closures may protect sensitive fishing grounds if their boundaries and restrictions fit local ecology. Farms need suitable siting and monitoring to limit habitat damage, escapes, disease, and effects on surrounding waters.
- Enforcement and information: A rule has limited value if it is not monitored and followed. Stock assessments, farm oversight, traceability, and transparent reporting help show whether intended protections are working.
- People and distribution: Assess who benefits from food production and who bears the costs of restrictions or environmental impacts. Fishing and farming both support livelihoods, and global output alone does not describe how benefits are shared.
- Time and place: Ecological conditions and pressures vary by region. A closure or farming system that is suitable in one place may not work in another, and recovery takes monitoring over time.
FAO Director-General QU Dongyu called effective management “the most powerful tool for conserving fisheries resources” in the 2025 global assessment release. That emphasis fits the evidence: closures and aquaculture are tools whose outcomes depend on management, not substitutes for it.

- Minimizing interference: Long aquascaping tools can prevent accidental injuries to Aquarium plants and damage to the environment. Long aquarium tweezer can adjust driftwood, and feed little reptiles instead of putting your hands into water. It is very effective in precise operation and avoiding getting your hands wet. Similarly, Long aquarium scissors are suited for small or thin water plants and help trim excess parts. It won't hurt the plant's cross-section.
- Maintenance tips: In order to extend tool life and keep performing well, we recommend that you rinse off the saltwater attached to the tools surface and then wipe up to keep dry.
What this means for the sustainability question
Closed fishing areas can form part of a strategy to rebuild stocks and protect habitats, especially when they are based on evidence, enforced, monitored, and coordinated with wider fisheries rules. Fish farming can contribute food and may reduce direct dependence on wild capture in some systems, but its net effects depend on species, feed, siting, management, and impacts on local ecosystems and communities. Neither approach makes overfishing disappear by definition; the relevant question is whether a specific fishery or farm is managed in a way that protects the resource and the people who depend on it.
