You don’t need to make two dogs share prized toys to help them play safely. Some dogs can relax around ordinary toys; others guard, steal, or become overexcited. Start by preventing competition, teach each dog useful skills separately, and allow shared play only while both dogs remain comfortable and you can supervise.
Start by preventing competition
If either dog guards toys, steals them, or gets overly excited around them, put away favorite toys before bringing the dogs together. Give high-value toys, bones, chews, and food-filled puzzles to the dogs separately. AKC recommends offering special treats and bones only when dogs are apart; VCA notes that food-enrichment items can prompt guarding and may require separation with a gate, door, pen, or crate.
Don’t test whether one dog will tolerate the other taking a valued item. Avoid reaching into a tense dog’s space or forcibly grabbing the toy. If you can’t actively supervise, separate the dogs. A securely placed pet gate or exercise pen can help create separate enrichment areas, but no barrier or toy guarantees that sharing will be safe.
Teach each dog to leave an item or trade
Practice with one dog at a time, away from the other. For “leave it,” AVSAB recommends starting with a low-value food item and rewarding the dog with something better when they turn away. Mark and reward that choice, then gradually make the exercise harder by changing your distance and the items, eventually practicing with toys or balls. Keep the setup easy enough that the dog can succeed.

For a trade, offer a particularly tasty reward for a guarded favorite. When appropriate, return the item after the dog gives it up. That helps teach that relinquishing an object doesn’t always mean losing it for good. These individual skills do not prove that either dog is ready to share a valuable toy; consider only calm, supervised play with low-value toys if both dogs are relaxed.
What safe shared play looks like
Supervise closely and watch both dogs, not just the one holding the toy. Loose, relaxed bodies and reciprocal play—with turns and opportunities for either dog to disengage—are more reassuring than one dog persistently pursuing or controlling the other. Interrupt regularly to give the dogs a break and check how each is responding.

Choose toys large enough that neither dog could swallow them, especially if the dogs differ in size. For food puzzles and other enrichment toys, VCA recommends choosing an item appropriate to the pet’s size, durable enough not to fracture easily into swallowable pieces, and supervising initial use. Keep the dogs apart when giving food rewards if treats could trigger competition.
Warning signs: interrupt and give space
A growl, stiff posture, freeze, hard stare, or guarding behavior means the dog needs space. Don’t punish the warning or ignore it. Also end play if either dog looks tense or fearful, tries to escape, pins their ears, raises their hackles, or moves toward growling or snapping. Calmly separate the dogs and remove the toy only when you can do so safely; don’t reach into a tense dog’s space.

If either dog can’t relax or disengage, switch to separate play and enrichment rather than trying again with a more valuable toy. Safety comes from preventing conflict and respecting each dog’s limits, not from making them share.

Separate the dogs and seek qualified help if there is serious guarding, snapping, lunging, a bite, a fight, or escalating warning behavior. AKC advises professional help when dogs seriously fight over possessions or a fight requires veterinary treatment. For a new or worsening behavior change, ask your veterinarian to assess whether a medical issue may be contributing.
