Look for a pattern, not one telltale gesture. A dog that turns away, stiffens, lowers its body, tucks its tail, licks its lips, freezes, trembles, or hides around someone may be uncomfortable—but context and the dog’s usual behavior matter. Give the dog room to move away, and note whether the signs ease when the person backs off. “Wary” is a useful everyday description, not a diagnosis you can make from a single posture.

What signs may mean your dog is uncomfortable?

Dogs can respond to fear or stress in different ways: they may try to escape, freeze, fidget, or show defensive behavior. Around a person, possible signs include cowering, turning or looking away, lowering the head or body, holding the ears back, tucking the tail, lip licking, yawning, pacing, trembling, panting, hiding, or trying to leave. These are clues to discomfort, not proof of a specific emotion or diagnosis. VCA’s overview of fear, phobias, and anxiety in dogs notes that anxiety can produce similar signs in anticipation of a trigger, before it appears.

Read the whole body and the situation

Compare what you see with your dog’s relaxed baseline. A soft mouth, round eyes, ears held semi-erect or forward, and evenly distributed weight can be signs of a relaxed dog, but no single posture is a rigid test. Consider what the person is doing, how close they are, and whether your dog can leave. Also watch what happens when distance increases: a dog whose posture softens or who settles after the person backs away may have been uncomfortable with that interaction.

A shake, pant, or lip lick can have causes other than fear. For example, VCA’s stress guidance distinguishes a shake after a bath or roll in grass from one immediately following a stressful event. Interpret such behavior alongside the surrounding events rather than treating it as a stand-alone signal.

Don’t rely on a wagging tail

Tail movement or position alone does not establish that a dog is friendly, afraid, or intending to bite. A stiff body and hard stare can be warning signs; a soft gaze and loose, wiggly body are more consistent with a relaxed interaction, according to AVSAB’s body-language guidance. Look at the dog’s overall posture and whether it is trying to disengage.

What should you do when a dog seems wary of someone?

  1. Stop the interaction. Ask the person to stop reaching, petting, leaning over, or insisting on a greeting. Let the dog move away rather than holding it in place. Cornell advises, “Owners should never force a dog to confront fears head-on.” (Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, “Fearful dogs”.)
  2. Create more space. Calmly guide the dog farther away or behind a secure barrier if needed. If the dog has a history of lunging or biting, use distance or a barrier when visitors arrive. VCA’s guidance on fear of people and other animals advises allowing retreat rather than forcing a greeting.
  3. If you offer treats, don’t use them to lure the dog closer. Luring can pressure a worried dog to approach beyond its comfort zone. AVSAB’s guidance on introducing dogs to strangers describes tossing treats near or behind the dog so it can eat while retaining the option to move away.
  4. Avoid punishment or forced exposure. Scolding a dog for fear-related behavior can make the situation worse. Cornell’s Dr. Pamela J. Perry says, “Punishment should not be used [with a fearful dog] because it may exacerbate the fear and lead to other behavior issues.” Gradual exposure paired with rewards should stay at an intensity that does not trigger the fear response.
  5. Offer a familiar quiet retreat at home. A crate can be one option if the dog is already comfortable resting in it; it is not a requirement or a treatment for every dog. Do not put the dog in a space where it cannot get away from a person who is worrying it.

Why can a nervous dog bark, growl, or snap?

A dog may bark or growl when frightened, but those behaviors alone do not reveal the cause. Treat them as information that the dog needs space. Avoid moving closer to test the dog’s reaction, and end the interaction safely. If a dog’s attempts to turn away, freeze, or retreat are ignored, its response may escalate. VCA’s veterinary behavior article warns, “Fear-based responses can escalate quickly if dogs do not experience relief.” A dog that stiffens when petting begins may be signaling that it wants contact to stop.

When should you contact a veterinarian?

Arrange veterinary advice if the behavior is new, extreme, frequent, worsening, occurs across many situations, or involves lunging, snapping, or biting. Fearful behavior can have medical contributors, including pain or illness; medication effects may also matter, and older dogs can develop sensory or cognitive changes that affect how they respond. A veterinarian can assess possible medical causes and help develop a plan or refer you to a qualified behavior professional.

Do not wait for a bite before taking avoidance or freezing seriously. These signs are reasons to reduce pressure and give the dog a way out, even when you cannot tell whether the underlying emotion is fear, stress, or ordinary wariness.
