Before you hand over your pet, keys, alarm code, and veterinary authority, verify three things: other clients can describe dependable work, the sitter’s current insurance fits the services you are buying, and the sitter has relevant experience with your animal and routine. Then meet in your home, identify every person who might enter, and put the service and emergency rules in writing.
This process is based on U.S.-oriented guidance from the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters (NAPPS), Pet Sitters International (PSI), and the American Kennel Club (AKC). Insurance language, licensing, bonding, and background-check rules vary by location, so treat association standards as practical benchmarks rather than universal law.

What a proper verification should establish
A polished profile, association logo, or impressive number of years does not by itself show that a sitter is a safe fit. Verification should give you evidence about the specific assignment you are hiring for.

1. Request references you can actually contact
Ask for recent, relevant clients
Request two or three recent clients who used the sitter for work resembling yours. A reference for occasional puppy visits may not tell you much about caring for an elderly cat that needs injections, or a reactive dog that must be walked alone. Ask for clients who can discuss the same service type, length of booking, and level of responsibility.
Ask the sitter for each client’s name, preferred contact method, and the approximate dates and services. Contact the references yourself rather than relying on testimonials copied onto a website. PSI also recognizes verified online company reviews as a possible reference source; treat them as supplementary evidence and check that the reviewer and business details appear genuine. Its consumer guidance is available at Pet Sitters International’s local-sitter guide.
Questions that produce useful answers
Use the same core questions with every reference so you can compare answers:
- How long did you use this sitter, and what services did they provide?
- Did visits occur at the agreed times and frequency?
- How did the sitter send updates, photos, or visit notes?
- Did they follow feeding, exercise, medication, and access instructions?
- How did they handle an unexpected problem, delay, illness, accident, or behavior issue?
- Did the sitter communicate promptly when plans changed?
- Who actually entered the home and provided care?
- Would you hire this sitter again, and what would you want a new client to know?
Invite specifics instead of asking only whether the person was “good.” A reference who can describe a missed visit, a medication refusal, or a veterinary call—and how the sitter responded—can reveal more judgment than a string of general compliments.
Cross-check the story
Compare the reference’s description with the sitter’s proposal. If the sitter says they work alone but a reference describes an assistant, ask for an explanation. Confirm that the business name, phone number, and service dates align where possible. A reference who will only communicate through an anonymous form, or who cannot describe the assignment, is weaker evidence than a reachable client willing to discuss it openly.

2. Examine insurance and bonding documents
Ask for current written proof
Ask to see a current certificate or other written proof of insurance before care begins. Check that the named insured is the person or business you are hiring, not an unrelated company or an expired former business name. Note the policy effective and expiration dates, then ask the sitter or insurer to explain the covered services and people.
PSI’s global standards call for general liability insurance specific to pet sitting or dog walking, covering the services offered and including care, custody, and control (CCC) coverage for pets and clients’ property. CCC language matters because ordinary general liability may not address damage or injury involving an animal while it is in the sitter’s care. Ask what the policy actually says rather than assuming a certificate proves every possible loss is covered.

Confirm that the policy matches your assignment
Ask direct, scenario-based questions:
- Does the policy cover in-home visits, overnight stays, boarding, transport, and dog walking, as applicable?
- Are employees, contractors, and substitutes covered, or only the named owner?
- Does coverage apply while the pet is in the sitter’s care, custody, and control?
- What protection applies to clients’ keys, belongings, and property?
- Is there bonding or theft coverage, and what conduct and documentation does it require?
- Are there exclusions for certain breeds, species, medications, off-leash activity, vehicles, or professional services?
- What deductible, limits, and claims-reporting deadlines apply?
Coverage is policy-specific. A certificate can show that a policy exists without proving that a particular incident would be paid. If the sitter cannot answer a question, ask for the insurer’s contact information and obtain clarification in writing. Do not treat NAPPS or PSI membership as an insurance guarantee, and do not infer that a policy is legally required everywhere; requirements depend on jurisdiction and business circumstances.
Keep a dated record
Save the document you reviewed, the date you checked it, and any written clarification. If the booking extends beyond the policy expiration date, ask for updated proof. If the insured name, service address, or business structure changes, verify the replacement document before the next visit.
3. Test whether experience matches your pet
Ask for examples, not just a number of years
“Ten years of experience” can mean occasional visits with healthy adult dogs, while your assignment may involve a senior cat, a fearful rescue, livestock guardian behavior, or multiple medications. Ask how long the sitter has performed the exact service and request examples involving:

- Leash reactivity, separation distress, escape risk, resource guarding, or fear of strangers.
- Multi-pet households, unusual feeding instructions, enrichment, or litter and sanitation needs.
- Overnight care, travel, transport, or coordination with a veterinarian.
Listen for a concrete description of what the sitter did, what they observed, and when they sought help. A credible sitter should state limits—for example, declining injectable medication without appropriate training or requiring a second person for a powerful dog—rather than claiming to handle everything.

Discuss first aid, CPR, and continuing education
Ask what pet first-aid or CPR training the sitter has, when it was completed, and whether it is current. Ask about other education relevant to your pet, such as medication handling, senior-pet care, fear-free handling, or behavior training. A certificate is evidence of a course or assessment, not proof that the sitter will make every decision correctly; use it alongside references and your observations.
Use “what would you do?” scenarios
Ask the sitter to walk through situations that could arise during your booking:
- Your pet vomits repeatedly or has trouble breathing.
- A dog slips its harness or a cat escapes through an open door.
- A pet refuses medication or a dose is uncertain.
- A key or alarm fails and you cannot be reached.
- Severe weather prevents a normal visit.
Look for a sequence that includes immediate safety, contacting you, using your veterinary instructions, documenting events, and obtaining urgent care when authorized. The answer should match your written emergency plan, not rely on vague promises.
4. Find out who can enter your home
Identify the actual care team
Ask whether the sitter works alone or uses employees, contractors, or substitutes. Request the names or roles of anyone who could be assigned, including a backup who might respond to an emergency. The person who attends the meet-and-greet should be the person—or a clearly identified member of the team—you expect to provide care.

Ask how screening is done
Ask whether each person who may enter has a current background check and what type of screening the company uses. PSI encourages current screening but notes that local rules may restrict sharing reports, especially for employees. A provider may be able to explain the screening company, date, and scope without giving you a copy. Ask how identity is verified, how keys are controlled, and whether access is removed when a worker leaves.
If the sitter refuses to disclose who might enter, says substitutes are assigned without notice, or cannot explain basic key-control procedures, pause the hiring decision. Your concern is not only the pet’s care; it is also the security of your home and personal information.
5. Hold an in-home meet-and-greet
Observe the interaction
Invite the sitter to meet you and the pet before you commit. Observe whether they approach at the animal’s pace, listen to your instructions, notice stress signals, and handle equipment safely. Your pet’s immediate reaction is not a pass-or-fail test—some animals are shy—but the sitter should respond calmly and avoid forcing contact.
Demonstrate feeding, medication, harnessing, crate use, litter care, or other routines. Ask the sitter to repeat the instructions in their own words. Correct misunderstandings before the first paid visit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCover access and communication details
During the meeting, agree on:
- Visit windows, duration, walk routes, exercise limits, feeding, cleaning, and enrichment.
- How updates and photos will be sent, and how quickly urgent messages should be answered.
- Key, lockbox, alarm, garage, camera, and entry-code procedures.
- Which rooms or belongings are off limits.
- What happens if the sitter is delayed, ill, or unable to attend.
- How severe weather, transportation problems, or unsafe conditions change the plan.
Do not give unrestricted access simply because the meeting felt friendly. Provide only the keys, codes, and permissions needed for the agreed service, and change temporary codes after the booking if your system allows it.

6. Put the arrangement in a written agreement
Check that the contract reflects the conversation
Ask for a written pet-sitting agreement before care starts. The AKC’s guidance on selecting a sitter describes terms such as payment, cancellation and inclement-weather policies, a veterinary release, and emergency-contact or guardianship information; see How to Choose the Right Pet Sitter for Your Dog.
The agreement should identify the parties, pets, address, service dates, visit frequency and duration, fees, payment timing, and any extra charges. It should also state:
- Exactly what care is included and what is excluded.
- Medication instructions and what counts as a missed or uncertain dose.
- Who may provide care or enter the home.
- Update method and expected response times.
- Veterinary authorization, spending limits, and transport permission.
- Emergency contacts, your regular veterinarian, and an alternate clinic.
- Backup arrangements if the sitter becomes unavailable.
- Cancellation, refund, late-arrival, holiday, and weather policies.
- Key handling, alarm procedures, and responsibility for property.
Verify the emergency authority
Read the veterinary-release language carefully. Confirm that the sitter knows which clinic to use, how to reach you, and whether they may authorize treatment up to a stated amount if you cannot respond. Give written instructions for allergies, medications, behavioral triggers, evacuation, and preferred contacts. Keep copies of the agreement and care notes where the sitter can access them without exposing unrelated personal information.

How to compare several sitters fairly
Interview candidates with the same questions and record answers before choosing. A lower price should not outweigh an obvious gap in coverage, relevant competence, or emergency planning.
| Decision area | Evidence to compare | Questions to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Reference quality | Recent, reachable clients who describe similar assignments and specific outcomes. | Did visits occur as promised? How were problems and updates handled? |
| Coverage fit | Current written policy, matching insured name, dates, services, people, CCC coverage, and any bonding. | Would the policy address this type of care, property, and worker? |
| Relevant competence | Examples with your pet’s species, needs, behavior, medication, and routine; current first-aid preparation. | What would the sitter do if the pet escaped, became ill, or refused medication? |
| Screening and access | Clear list of possible caregivers, screening explanation, and key-control process. | Who enters, how are they checked, and how are substitutes disclosed? |
| Operational fit | Responsive communication, backup coverage, emergency instructions, and a complete agreement. | What happens during illness, severe weather, or a failed entry system? |
| Observed interaction | Safe handling, attentive listening, and a calm response to your pet at the meeting. | Did the sitter understand and accurately repeat the care routine? |
Warning signs that justify stopping or slowing down
One awkward answer is not automatically disqualifying, but unresolved patterns deserve caution:
- The sitter will not provide reachable references or gives only unverifiable testimonials.
- Insurance proof is expired, names a different insured party, or excludes the service you need.
- The sitter treats membership badges or years in business as a substitute for documents and examples.
- They cannot explain who may enter your home or how substitutes are screened.
- They dismiss your pet’s medical, behavioral, or escape risks as unimportant.
- They resist a meet-and-greet, written agreement, veterinary release, or emergency plan.
- They pressure you to provide keys, payment, or unrestricted access before terms are clear.
Ask one follow-up question and set a deadline for missing documents. If the answer remains evasive, choose another candidate rather than hoping a problem will resolve during a trip.
Questions to ask every prospective sitter
- Can you provide two or three recent clients I may contact?
- Have you cared for pets with needs like mine? What did that involve?
- What pet first-aid or CPR training do you have, and when was it completed?
- May I review current proof of insurance? Is it written for pet sitting or dog walking?
- What happens if my pet is injured, becomes ill, escapes, or needs urgent veterinary care?
- Will anyone besides you enter my home or provide care? What screening do they receive?
- What written agreement, care log, and emergency forms do you use?
- How will you communicate during the booking, and who is your backup?
Location and credential limits
The guidance cited here comes from U.S.-oriented professional and consumer organizations. Your city, state, province, or country may impose different business, animal-care, insurance, tax, licensing, or background-check rules. Ask the sitter which local requirements apply and verify them with the relevant authority when the distinction matters.
Association membership can help you find providers who follow published professional practices, and a certification can show completed education or assessment. Neither is a regulator’s inspection or a promise of safe care. Verify the sitter’s own references, documents, conduct, and agreement for your specific booking.
