What UV means to a bee, bird, or other animal depends on its photoreceptors, eye optics, and visual processing. There is no single view shared by all UV-sensitive animals, and sensitivity is not universal.
How does ultraviolet vision work?
UV has wavelengths slightly shorter than those people normally see. A review of terrestrial vertebrates uses about 320–400 nanometers (nm) for near-UV and contrasts that range with an approximate human-visible band of 400–700 nm. These are useful conventions, not a promise that every species detects the whole near-UV range.

UV visual pigments are built from opsins, the same broad family of proteins used in other photoreceptors. When light reflected or absorbed at UV wavelengths reaches a UV-sensitive receptor, it changes that receptor’s signal. If the animal’s visual system compares the UV channel with responses from other receptor types, UV can contribute to color discrimination. Some animals may instead use UV receptors for more limited, innate responses.
UV sensitivity is not identical to violet sensitivity. A review of visual pigments distinguishes UV-sensitive pigments with peak sensitivity below 400 nm from violet-sensitive pigments peaking at 410–435 nm in some vertebrates. A receptor’s measured sensitivity tells us what wavelengths can affect its response; it does not, by itself, reveal the animal’s subjective experience of color.

Which animals can see ultraviolet?
UV photosensitivity is widespread among studied arthropods and vertebrates, but evidence is concentrated in those groups and should not be generalized to every animal. Even within a group, species can differ in receptor sensitivity and in how their visual systems use it. Cronin and Bok’s 2016 review surveys UV photoreception and its roles across these animals.
An older review by Honkavaara and colleagues reported that the diurnal bird species studied at the time, along with some rodents, reptiles, and amphibians, were likely able to see near-UV. Its figures—at least 35 diurnal bird species, four rodent species, 11 reptilian species, and two amphibian species—describe the literature covered by that review, not current totals of UV-seeing species. Wiley lists the article’s first publication as 18 September 2008, while its DOI identifies it as a 2002 publication. Read the review and its date information at Wiley.

What do animals use UV cues for?
UV can provide contrast or color signals that are unavailable to human vision. Reviews identify several contexts in which animals may use those cues:
- Orientation and navigation: UV-sensitive signals can contribute to an animal’s assessment of its surroundings.
- Foraging and food detection: UV can affect how a target stands out to a viewer with UV-sensitive receptors.
- Detecting potential predators: UV information may help distinguish objects or animals in the environment.
- Mate assessment and communication: UV reflectance can form part of signals animals assess in potential mates or exchange with members of their own species.
- Camouflage: Whether an animal blends into its background can depend on the wavelengths its viewer detects, including UV.
Flowers and pollinators offer an accessible example: UV reflectance and absorption can change how a flower contrasts for a UV-sensitive insect. A flower’s color to a person does not tell us how it appears to an insect, and it is not accurate to assume all flowers display the same UV pattern. The available reviews support the importance of UV cues for many pollinators, not a universal floral design. Cronin and Bok’s review discusses UV vision’s biological roles, while a 2024 review covers its implications for foraging, mate choice, camouflage, and behavioral studies.

Can humans see what a bee or bird sees?
Not directly. A camera can record sensor channels, and an image-maker can assign those channels visible colors to create a false-color illustration. Such an image can help show where measured signals differ from a human-visible image, but the assigned colors are a visualization—not a literal view through an animal’s eyes. There is no direct correspondence between human color perception and the colors another species experiences.
Researchers can measure the spectrum of illumination and the light reflected by a target with a spectrophotometer. Combining those measurements with known photoreceptor sensitivities helps estimate which visual signals are available to an animal. It cannot reproduce the animal’s subjective sight. A UV flashlight, blacklight, or UV camera likewise does not, on its own, simulate animal vision.

Why UV matters when studying animal behavior
If an experiment measures visible light but overlooks UV, its interpretation may miss a cue that matters to the animal. A 2024 review in Proceedings of the Royal Society B warns that unmeasured UV can affect conclusions about behavior and discusses the importance of illumination and target reflectance. The strength of a claim depends on its evidence: receptor measurements establish sensitivity, behavioral experiments test responses, and visual models estimate available signals. None alone establishes exactly what an animal subjectively sees. Read the 2024 review on animal sensory systems and experimental design.
