Scientists have formally described Physalia mikazuki, a new Portuguese man-of-war species identified from specimens collected at Gamo Beach in Sendai Bay, Japan. The species description is based on anatomical comparisons and mitochondrial DNA—not color or a beach photograph alone. Researchers say the find is the first verified record of Physalia in Japan’s Tohoku region and the first formal description of a Physalia species from Japan.
What is the new Portuguese man-of-war species?
The newly described species is Physalia mikazuki. Its Japanese common name is ミカヅキノエボシ (Mikazuki-no-eboshi). Tohoku University says the name refers to Date Masamune, Sendai’s feudal lord, and the crescent moon on his helmet.

The study describes the species from colonies collected at Gamo Beach, on Sendai Bay in Miyagi Prefecture. Its paper, published in Frontiers in Marine Science on October 30, 2025, calls this the first formal description of a Physalia species from Japan.
Where and when was it found?
The paper reports that about 30 floats bearing colonies were stranded along a 1.5-kilometer stretch of Gamo Beach on June 11 and 12, 2024. Researchers collected six specimens for study. The site is in Tohoku, about 2,000 kilometers north of Okinawa and 300 kilometers north of Kanagawa Bay, where earlier Japanese reports existed.

Tohoku University’s English account separately recounts co-author Yoshiki Ochiai’s initial encounter, saying he first found the animals in July 2024 while conducting unrelated research. That account and the paper’s dated June collection record describe different events; the paper gives the precise dates for the specimens collected for analysis. The university published its English research news on October 31, 2025, and its Japanese press release on December 1, 2025.
How did scientists determine it was a new species?
The authors examined anatomical features and analyzed two mitochondrial genes, 16S rRNA and COI. The specimens formed a distinct, well-supported genetic clade and showed diagnostic structural traits. The paper identifies P. mikazuki as the previously unnamed “Cluster B2” lineage, which had been associated with samples from Japan, Pakistan, and Mexico but lacked morphological specimens suitable for formal comparison.

Among the paper’s measurements and descriptions, the gas-filled float (pneumatophore) ranged from 9.25 to 72.4 millimeters long. It had a bluish to deep-blue or purple crest and a translucent greenish membrane. The authors also described up to six posterior clusters of zooids, along with characteristic digestive zooids (gastrozooids) and tentacle structures.

The genus has historically been treated as one widespread species, while genomic studies have supported multiple lineages. The new paper makes a species-level conclusion for its studied specimens within a genus whose taxonomy remains under revision; it also notes that more high-quality, morphologically verified type material and images across taxa would help stabilize comparisons.

How is P. mikazuki different from other Portuguese man-of-war?
The study distinguishes the species using several kinds of evidence together: float dimensions and form, crest coloration, the arrangement of zooid clusters, the shape of the gastrozooid, principal tentacle structure, and genetic placement. Color or location alone is not enough to identify an individual. The authors note that P. mikazuki overlaps geographically with P. utriculus in Japan, so the Tohoku finding does not mean every Portuguese man-of-war reported in Japan belongs to the newly described species.
Did warming or a changing current bring it north?
The authors propose that northward dispersal may be associated with a recent northward extension of the Kuroshio Current and unusually warm sea-surface conditions in Tohoku. Their environmental context includes sea-surface-temperature changes of more than 2°C in the region between 2022 and 2024. Oceanographic data and Lagrangian particle-trajectory simulations support a plausible route, and the researchers’ long-term monitoring found no earlier Physalia reports at Gamo Beach before 2023.

This evidence supports a possible explanation for a recent regional occurrence, not proof that warming alone caused the animals to arrive. It also does not establish that P. mikazuki has permanently settled or formed a local population in Tohoku.
What kind of animal is it, and should beachgoers be concerned?
A Portuguese man-of-war is a surface-drifting colonial siphonophore, not a single-bodied jellyfish in the everyday sense. Its gas-filled float carries specialized zooids that function together as a colony. Wind and surface currents move it, while its orientation and colony form also influence its path.

The paper describes P. mikazuki as venomous and notes potential envenomation risk during beach recreation. Its tentacles can sting, so follow local beach warnings and avoid contact with stranded animals. The study does not provide a species-specific medical treatment protocol; it should not be treated as establishing one.
The researchers also note ecological interest beyond beach safety: Portuguese man-of-war prey on fish larvae. The study’s description therefore documents both a newly recognized species and a regional occurrence relevant to coastal monitoring.
