Human Cases of Raccoon Parasite May Be Your Best Excuse to Buy a Flamethrower

Raccoon roundworm infection is rare but potentially devastating. Here is how transmission works, why heat matters, why a flamethrower is usually a bad idea, and how to handle a raccoon latrine safely.

Baylisascaris procyonis is a raccoon roundworm. Raccoons can carry adult worms without appearing ill and shed microscopic eggs in their feces. People are accidental hosts: after infective eggs are swallowed, larvae can migrate through the organs, eyes, or central nervous system instead of developing into adult worms in the intestine.

Why this parasite made the news

In September 2024, Los Angeles County announced an investigation involving two human cases. A subsequent CDC Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, published in 2025, described two unrelated children with severe disease. Reported findings included encephalopathy, ocular larva migrans, eosinophils in the cerebrospinal fluid, and abnormal brain imaging.

Human infection remains rare. The 2025 report said that 35 U.S. cases had been reported at that time. An older CDC page cited 23 published neurologic cases through 2018. Those numbers describe different time periods and case definitions, so they should not be treated as a contradiction.

Rare does not mean harmless. Documented human disease can involve the nervous system, eyes, or internal organs and may result in neurologic impairment, blindness, or death. The most vulnerable practical exposure pattern is accidental hand-to-mouth ingestion of contaminated soil, objects, or fecal material. Young children and people with developmental disabilities or pica may face greater exposure risk because they are more likely to put contaminated hands or objects in their mouths.

How raccoon roundworm reaches people

The key detail is that freshly shed eggs are not immediately infectious. They generally need at least two to four weeks in the environment to embryonate. Once they become infective, however, they can persist for years under favorable conditions.

That makes a raccoon latrine more concerning than a single fresh dropping. A latrine is a repeatedly used defecation site. Raccoons may establish one at the base or fork of a tree, on a deck or roof, in a patio area, on a woodpile, or inside a garage, attic, or crawl space.

The eggs are microscopic. You cannot determine by looking at raccoon feces whether it contains Baylisascaris eggs, and you should not assume that a clean-looking surface is safe if a latrine has been present.

So where does the flamethrower come in?

There is a factual kernel beneath the joke: ordinary household disinfectants do not reliably kill Baylisascaris eggs. Extreme heat can. CDC cleanup guidance identifies boiling water and, where appropriate, a propane torch as ways to treat feces-contaminated hard surfaces.

That does not mean a consumer flamethrower is a recommended household parasite-control device. Flaming can cause fires, burns, explosions, toxic smoke, and permanent damage to the surface. It is unsuitable around buildings, dry vegetation, wooden structures, roofing materials, insulation, plastics, and many indoor environments. Local fire codes may also restrict or prohibit its use.

A torch is potentially relevant only for a suitable, nonflammable hard surface, under controlled conditions, with appropriate local authorization and a clear way to prevent fire spread. Before considering heat treatment, contact your local health department, animal-control agency, or fire department. For many sites—especially indoor or extensive contamination—the right answer is professional cleanup, not more equipment.

What to do if you find a raccoon latrine

1. Keep people and pets away

Block access to the area, particularly for children and dogs. Do not sweep, rake, blow, or vacuum the feces. Those actions can spread contaminated dust and particles over a wider area.

If the latrine is in an attic, crawl space, garage, play area, or another difficult location, stop and arrange help rather than improvising. Extensive contamination, porous materials, insulation, or a confined space are good reasons to use a wildlife-control or environmental-cleanup professional.

2. Remove the raccoon attractant and close access

Cleanup will not solve the problem if raccoons can return. Secure garbage and compost, remove outdoor food and water sources, cover sandboxes, close openings to attics and crawl spaces, and remove brush or other denning cover where practical. Do not seal an opening until you are confident no raccoon or dependent young is inside; an animal trapped in a structure creates a separate welfare and odor problem.

3. Use protective equipment if you are permitted to clean it yourself

For a small, accessible site, official guidance recommends disposable gloves, rubber boots or disposable boot covers, and an N95-rated respirator when working in a confined space. An N95 respirator is for reducing inhalation exposure to dust and other hazards during cleanup; it does not make a contaminated area safe and does not prevent swallowing eggs.

  • Wear disposable gloves and boots or boot covers.
  • Use an N95-rated respirator in a confined space, fitted according to its instructions.
  • Lightly mist material if needed to reduce dust, but do not use a forceful spray.
  • Keep children, pets, and bystanders out of the work area.
  • Do not use a leaf blower, dry broom, or vacuum cleaner.

4. Remove material without spreading it

Use a shovel, scoop, or similar tool to lift feces and visibly contaminated disposable material. Work slowly. Place waste and disposable protective items into heavy-duty bags and follow local instructions for disposal. Do not assume that placing an unsealed bag in ordinary household trash is allowed in every jurisdiction.

For indoor areas where a torch is inappropriate, CDC guidance describes removing contaminated material and using a damp sponge with hot, soapy water for residual material. Porous items that cannot be adequately cleaned may need to be discarded or assessed by a professional.

5. Treat suitable hard surfaces with heat—not random chemicals

Boiling water may be appropriate for some heat-resistant, nonflammable hard surfaces. It creates a serious scald hazard and can damage materials, so keep people and animals away and consider whether the surface can tolerate it.

A propane torch is an option mentioned in public-health guidance for appropriate outdoor hard surfaces, but it requires fire precautions and local approval. Never flame feces near a house, wooden deck, dry grass, mulch, fuel, propane cylinders, vehicles, roofing, insulation, plastics, or other combustible materials. If you cannot confidently control the fire risk, do not use a torch.

Do not substitute bleach, household disinfectant, alcohol, ammonia, or an online “parasite killer” for a validated treatment. Common chemical disinfectants should not be assumed to destroy Baylisascaris eggs.

6. Finish the cleanup carefully

  • Remove gloves and other protective equipment without touching clean skin or clothing.
  • Wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water.
  • Launder contaminated clothing separately using hot water and detergent.
  • Clean reusable tools according to professional or local-health guidance.
  • Keep pets away until the area is cleaned and any heat-treated surface has cooled.
Basic cleanup supplies: disposable gloves, disposable boot covers or rubber boots, an N95 respirator for an appropriate confined-space task, heavy-duty contractor bags, a shovel or metal scoop, a sponge, soap, and a safe hot-water source. This list is not a substitute for professional assessment, fire precautions, or local disposal rules.

When to call a professional

Contact animal control, a wildlife-exclusion company, or a qualified cleanup service when the latrine is indoors, extensive, in an attic or crawl space, mixed with insulation, difficult to reach, or located near combustible materials. Professional help is also sensible if a child or person with pica may have had repeated access to the area.

Look for a provider that can explain both parts of the job: removing the contamination and preventing raccoons from returning. Ask about licensing, local disposal requirements, the treatment of porous materials, and how the company controls dust. Availability and legal requirements vary by location.

What if someone may have swallowed contaminated material?

Do not wait for a dramatic symptom to seek advice. If someone may have swallowed soil, feces, or an object contaminated by a raccoon latrine, contact a healthcare professional or poison-control service promptly and explain the exposure, the date, and the person’s age and symptoms.

Early evaluation matters when exposure and compatible symptoms raise suspicion. Human disease can involve the brain, spinal cord, eyes, or internal organs. Diagnosis may require specialized testing, including serology performed through or with assistance from the CDC. Do not self-treat with deworming medication.

Seek urgent medical care for symptoms such as unusual sleepiness or confusion, weakness, loss of coordination, seizures, vision changes, severe headache, or other sudden neurologic or eye symptoms after a possible exposure. These symptoms have many possible causes, but a known raccoon-feces exposure is important information for clinicians.

What about dogs?

Dogs can become infected after ingesting infective eggs or infected wildlife. Keep dogs away from raccoon latrines and prevent them from eating feces, soil, or dead animals. If your dog may have been exposed, call a veterinarian. Deworming should be selected and supervised by a veterinary professional rather than attempted with an over-the-counter product or a leftover prescription.

The practical verdict on the “flamethrower”

The headline is darkly funny because heat really is more useful against these eggs than many ordinary disinfectants. But the responsible purchase is usually an N95 respirator, gloves, boot protection, cleanup tools, or professional wildlife exclusion—not a recreational flame weapon.

The infection is rare; the potential consequences are serious enough that a raccoon toilet deserves careful handling rather than casual experimentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can household bleach kill Baylisascaris eggs?

Can household bleach kill raccoon roundworm eggs?

Can household bleach kill Baylisascaris eggs?

No. Ordinary chemical disinfectants should not be assumed to reliably kill Baylisascaris procyonis eggs. Public-health guidance focuses on careful removal and validated heat treatment—such as boiling water or, only where appropriate and legally permitted, a propane torch—rather than unverified chemical products.

Can every raccoon give me this parasite?

No. Infection requires swallowing infective eggs, not merely being near a raccoon or smelling feces. The eggs generally need two to four weeks in the environment to become infective, and human disease is rare. However, a repeated latrine can contaminate soil and objects for years, so it should still be handled carefully.

What should I do if my child may have swallowed raccoon feces or contaminated soil?

Contact a healthcare professional or poison-control service promptly and describe the exposure. Seek urgent care for neurologic or eye symptoms such as confusion, unusual sleepiness, weakness, seizures, vision changes, or severe headache.

Can dogs get raccoon roundworm?

Call your veterinarian. Dogs can become infected, and any deworming should be selected and supervised by a veterinary professional. Keep the dog away from raccoon latrines and prevent it from eating feces, soil, or wildlife.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Baylisascaris procyonis infection is rare but can cause severe neurologic or eye disease. Raccoon feces should be treated as potentially contaminated, but a flamethrower is not a general-purpose solution. Prevent raccoon access, avoid disturbing the latrine, use protective equipment, and call professionals for indoor, extensive, or fire-risk cleanup.
