Police later reported that the final autopsy gave bacterial infection as the probable cause, possibly following a mouth wound from a stick lodged there. The reported forensic findings did not support the early allegation that he had been shot—and the label “spy” was never verified.
Where and when Hvaldimir was found
Norway’s Directorate of Fisheries reported that Hvaldimir was found dead in Stavanger harbor on Saturday, 31 August 2024. He was sent to the Norwegian Veterinary Institute’s Sandnes branch for an autopsy. The directorate said he had first appeared near Måsøy in Finnmark in April 2019, then ranged along Norway’s coast and spent a short time on Sweden’s west coast. Norway’s Directorate of Fisheries announcement was published before the autopsy conclusion, so it establishes the discovery and reported movements, not the cause of death.
What the final autopsy said about his death
In a final-autopsy account reported by CBS News and the Associated Press on 4 October 2024, police said the probable cause of death was bacterial infection, possibly resulting from a wound in the mouth caused by a stuck stick. Amund Preede Revheim, head of the North Sea and Environment section of police in south-western Norway, was quoted as saying: “The report concluded that the probable cause of death was bacterial infection — possibly as a result of a wound in the mouth from a stuck stick.” The cautious wording matters: the report identified a probable cause, not an absolute certainty.
CBS/AP reported that the stick was about 35 centimeters (14 inches) long and 3 centimeters (1 inch) wide. The report also said Hvaldimir’s stomach was empty and many organs had decomposed, making the examination difficult. These are details attributed to the reporting on the autopsy, not independent observations. CBS News/AP’s report on the autopsy also reproduced the police statement: “There have been no findings from the autopsy that indicate that the whale has been shot.”

Why people suspected Hvaldimir had been shot
On 4 September 2024, before the final findings were reported, animal-welfare organizations OneWhale and NOAH said visible injuries could indicate gunshots and announced that they had filed a police report. Their release records the organizations’ allegation and comments from OneWhale founder Regina Haug and NOAH leader and veterinarian Siri Martinsen; it is evidence of what they claimed at that point, not confirmation that the injuries were gunshot wounds. OneWhale and NOAH’s 4 September release describes that early allegation.
The later police account reported a different conclusion. The Veterinary Institute and police forensic technicians assessed the injuries as not being gunshot wounds, and X-rays of the chest and head showed no projectiles or other metal fragments. Police said the autopsy provided no indication of foul play that warranted a criminal investigation into the death. The chronology is important: the gunshot claim was an early allegation based on visual assessment; the later reported conclusion drew on the autopsy, forensic assessment, and X-rays.

Why Hvaldimir was called the “Russian spy whale”
Hvaldimir first drew wide attention in 2019 after he was found wearing a harness marked “Equipment St. Petersburg” with what appeared to be a camera mount. Those details fueled speculation in media coverage that he might have been connected to Russian military activity. CBS/AP reported that Moscow had never officially responded to the claim.
The harness and mount explain the nickname, but they do not establish that Hvaldimir was a spy. The cited accounts do not establish his origin, training, ownership, or mission. “Suspected” and “so-called” are therefore more accurate descriptions than stating espionage as fact.
