What the 2024 ranking says
India ranked 176th out of 180 countries in the inaugural 2024 Nature Conservation Index (NCI), with a score of 45.5 out of 100. The edition was released in October 2024.

That result places India near the bottom of this particular international comparison. It does not, by itself, mean that India has no successful conservation programs or that it is “the worst country for nature.” The NCI measures performance across a defined set of conservation-related indicators, and India’s environment ministry has challenged whether the index used sufficiently complete data or reflected the country’s broader conservation work.

The index combines information from sources including the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the World Bank, and considers countries’ participation in international agreements and frameworks such as the Convention on Biological Diversity and CITES.
It should be understood as a comparative assessment of conservation management and related national conditions—not as a complete census of every species, habitat, protected area, or ecological success in a country.
The four areas measured by the index
| Pillar | What it broadly examines |
|---|---|
| Land Management | How land and habitats are managed, including protected areas and habitat condition. |
| Threats to Biodiversity | Pressures that place species and ecosystems at risk, including habitat loss and other human-driven threats. |
| Capacity and Governance | The institutions, policies, conservation programs, and governance conditions that support environmental protection. |
| Future Trends | Forward-looking indicators intended to show whether environmental performance is improving or deteriorating. |
Because the final score combines these pillars, a country’s overall position can reflect several different strengths and weaknesses. The ranking is therefore not a single measurement of wildlife abundance or a direct count of threatened animals.

Reporting associated with the index linked India’s low result primarily to concerns in land management and biodiversity threats. The concerns attributed to the index included:
- Conversion and degradation of natural land;
- Habitat loss and fragmentation;
- Pressure from agriculture, urban expansion, and infrastructure development;
- Risks facing biodiversity as human activity intensifies; and
- Relatively limited coverage of marine protected areas.
These points should be attributed to the NCI and reporting about its findings. They are not a substitute for a separate, indicator-by-indicator assessment using India’s national environmental datasets.
India is also a biologically diverse country with protected areas, threatened-species programs, community conservation work, and internationally significant habitats. A low comparative score does not erase those efforts. It indicates that, under the NCI’s selected indicators and weighting, the country’s overall performance was judged weak relative to the other 179 countries included.

Why the ranking is contested
In a response posted on November 28, 2024, India’s Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change questioned the completeness and suitability of the assessment.
The ministry said that country-reported data were not used for many of the indicators and that the index relied on other sources. It also argued that the assessment did not adequately recognize India’s participation in international environmental initiatives, including:
- the International Big Cat Alliance;
- Mission LiFE;
- the International Solar Alliance; and
- the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure.
This is an important qualification, but it should not be treated as an automatic disproof of the ranking. The two documented positions can be stated together:
The published NCI result places India 176th of 180, with a score of 45.5. India’s environment ministry disputes the assessment’s data coverage and says the result omits important national and international conservation efforts.
The most useful way to read the disagreement is as a question about measurement: which data were selected, how indicators were normalized and weighted, and whether the index captured the conservation outcomes and policy initiatives that India considers important.
What “176 out of 180” does—and does not—mean
It does mean:
- India performed poorly in the 2024 NCI’s overall comparison.
- The reported score was 45.5 out of 100.
- The index identified weaknesses related especially to land management and biodiversity pressures.
- India’s result deserves scrutiny and a closer examination of the underlying indicators.
It does not mean:
- India has no wildlife or conservation successes.
- Every country ranked above India performs better on every environmental issue.
- The NCI measured the total health of every Indian ecosystem.
- India is objectively “the worst country for nature” in every possible sense.
- The ranking alone proves that all of the index’s underlying data are complete or incorrect.
Readers should also avoid confusing the Nature Conservation Index with Yale’s Environmental Performance Index or with the Nature Index. These are separate projects with different purposes, datasets, and methods.

What would improvement require?
Whether one accepts the NCI’s precise ranking or shares the ministry’s concerns, the policy priorities suggested by the debate are broadly clear:
- Improve habitat protection. Protected areas need effective management, ecological connectivity, and protection from incompatible land conversion—not merely designation on a map.
- Reduce fragmentation. Roads, cities, farms, mines, and other infrastructure can divide habitats even when some natural land remains. Wildlife corridors and better spatial planning can help reduce that pressure.
- Strengthen species protection. Conservation programs need reliable monitoring, enforcement against illegal wildlife trade, and focused recovery plans for threatened species.
- Address marine gaps. Better protection and management of coastal and marine habitats would respond to one of the concerns associated with the index.
- Make data more complete and transparent. Publicly accessible, current national data would make international comparisons easier to audit and would allow India’s conservation results to be represented more fully.
- Connect policy with outcomes. International initiatives and national programs matter, but their value is ultimately demonstrated through measurable improvements in habitat condition, species recovery, pollution control, and resilience.
What readers can do
A country ranking is not a complete action plan, but it can draw attention to the practical work required to protect habitats and wildlife. Readers who want to contribute can investigate reputable conservation organizations rather than treating the ranking as a reason to buy an unrelated product.
WWF-India describes work involving threatened wildlife, habitat restoration, communities, nature-based solutions, and environmental awareness. Readers can learn about its conservation work and available support routes.
Wildlife Trust of India documents projects involving endangered animals, habitats, rehabilitation, wildlife-trade prevention, and broader conservation efforts. Its project and support information may be useful to readers looking for direct conservation action.
Those organizations are included as optional reader resources, not as evidence that the NCI ranking is correct, and readers should review each organization’s current programs and terms before contributing.

- Durable Tritan Bottle: Lightweight Tritan construction supports daily hydration during workouts, commuting, travel, and everyday activities.
- Odor and Stain Resistant: Tritan material helps resist odors and stains to support a clean taste between refills.
- Integrated Carry Handle: Built in handle provides a secure and comfortable grip for hydration on the go.
- Dishwasher Safe Design: Bottle and cap are dishwasher safe for convenient cleaning and daily maintenance.
The defensible conclusion is more precise than “India is worst for nature.” The NCI identified serious weaknesses in the indicators it selected, while India’s environment ministry argued that the assessment used incomplete country data and failed to reflect significant conservation initiatives. The ranking is best treated as a comparative diagnostic tool—one that can highlight risks and invite scrutiny, but cannot on its own describe the whole state of India’s biodiversity or conservation record.
