Pilots N Paws is a volunteer network that connects private pilots and aircraft owners with animal rescues, shelters, handlers, foster homes, and receiving organizations. It does not operate like a commercial airline. Instead, it helps coordinate the individual flights, ground transfers, airport handoffs, and care arrangements that can move an animal from one rescue opportunity to another.

Pilots N Paws is a volunteer network that connects private pilots and aircraft owners with animal rescues, shelters, handlers, foster homes, and receiving organizations. It does not operate like a commercial airline or a single national animal-transport company. Instead, it helps people coordinate the many individual flights, ground transfers, airport handoffs, and care arrangements needed to move an animal from one rescue opportunity to another.

That distinction explains both the name and the organization’s real achievement: a dog, cat, pig, rabbit, reptile, or other transportable animal may reach safety through a relay of volunteers, with each pilot flying one leg of a much larger mission.

What is Pilots N Paws?

Pilots N Paws is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and discussion-board-based coordination platform for animal-rescue flights. Rescue organizations and shelters can use the network to share transportation needs, while volunteer pilots and other participants can look for missions they are able to support.

The network may bring together:

  • Animal rescues and overcrowded shelters
  • Volunteer pilots and aircraft owners
  • Airport handlers, often called “wranglers”
  • Ground drivers and other transport volunteers
  • Foster homes and overnight-care providers
  • Receiving rescues, shelters, and adoption organizations

Pilots N Paws coordinates the people and information around a mission. The rescue group, pilots, handlers, and receiving organization still carry out important parts of the transport. It is therefore more accurate to call Pilots N Paws a meeting place and volunteer coordination network than an airline, charter service, or adoption agency.

How Pilots N Paws began

Pilots N Paws says it was founded in 2008 by animal-lover Debi Boies and pilot Jon Wehrenberg. The idea grew from a flight Wehrenberg agreed to make for a rescued Doberman traveling from Florida to South Carolina.

That successful trip demonstrated a problem familiar to many rescue groups: an animal may be in a region with limited placement options while a suitable rescue or foster destination is hundreds of miles away. A private aircraft cannot solve every transport problem, but a volunteer aviation network can sometimes make a long-distance relocation possible—especially when several people share the work.

Why an animal may need to fly

Animal rescue often involves a mismatch between where an animal is located and where help is available. One shelter may be overcrowded, while a rescue in another state has a foster home, veterinary resources, or an adoption pathway.

Ground transport remains important, but a long road journey can require many hours, multiple drivers, overnight arrangements, and considerable fuel. Volunteer aviation may shorten some portions of the route or connect locations that are difficult to reach by road. The flight is not the entire rescue solution; it is one carefully coordinated link in the chain.

What a rescue flight looks like

A mission may be a short flight between two nearby airports, but long-distance transports often work as relays. A typical operation can look like this:

  1. A rescue identifies the need. The organization confirms the animal, its condition, the origin location, and a receiving rescue or foster destination.
  2. The transport is coordinated. Details such as dates, airports, route segments, kennel requirements, records, and ground support must be arranged.
  3. Pilots volunteer for individual legs. One pilot may be able to fly only a particular segment, aircraft, or schedule.
  4. Handlers meet the aircraft. A ground volunteer or “wrangler” helps with loading, unloading, paperwork, and safe handoff at the airport.
  5. The animal changes hands when necessary. It may move between aircraft, or between air and ground transport, during the journey.
  6. The receiving organization takes over. The final rescue, foster home, or shelter accepts the animal and continues its care.

Pilots N Paws’ published “Village” example illustrates this relay model: dogs were collected at different locations, transferred between pilots and aircraft, and ultimately delivered to a rescue in Denver. The example matters because “one flight at a time” does not necessarily mean one uninterrupted flight. It means that individual volunteers make one part of the overall journey possible.

The people behind each handoff

The visible part of a rescue flight is the aircraft, but aviation is only one component. A successful mission depends on accurate information and reliable handoffs.

Petmate Sky Kennel for Air Travel, 28in Dog Crate for Pets 15 to 30lbs
  • FIRST-CLASS COMFORT FOR PETS: The Petmate Sky Kennel meets IATA requirements for live animal transport and meets most airline cargo specifications, providing secure air travel for pets; it includes 360-degree ventilation and tie-down strap holes
  • EASY TRAVEL PREPARATION: The Sky Kennel is a travel dog crate that comes with essentials including two 'LIVE ANIMAL' stickers, a food and water cup, ID stickers, and an absorbent pad to provide a great travel experience for you and your pet
  • SPACIOUS INTERIOR FOR MEDIUM DOGS: Ideal for Pomeranians or similar, this small dog kennel accommodates pets 20-30 lbs, offering enough room to walk and rest comfortably during travel, with interior dimensions of 24.25" L x 18.25" W x 19.5" H
  • DURABLE BUILD QUALITY: Made in the USA from EcoTEC Plastic with a minimum of 90% pre-consumer recycled material, this medium dog crate features an easy-squeeze latch door with interlocks and a folding top handle for added security

Rescue coordinators may need to confirm veterinary records, health status, identification, kennel size, feeding and medication instructions, and the receiving group’s readiness. Pilots need accurate weight and loading information, suitable weather, usable airports, and a realistic schedule. Handlers must be present when an aircraft arrives, and ground volunteers may be needed when the next flight cannot depart immediately.

A delay in one segment can affect every later segment. Weather, mechanical problems, airport access, animal stress, or a missing handler may require the plan to be changed. That is why the organization’s model depends on communication rather than simply matching an animal with “a pilot who is going that way.”

What kinds of animals are transported?

Pilots N Paws’ official media material says its flights have carried dogs, cats, pigs, reptiles, rabbits, and other animals that can be transported by plane. Dogs and cats are the most familiar examples, but the mission is broader than household pets.

That does not mean every animal or request is automatically suitable for air transport. The decision can depend on:

  • The animal’s size, health, age, temperament, and ability to tolerate travel
  • Whether the animal can safely remain in a kennel during the trip
  • Aircraft cabin or cargo-space limitations
  • Weather, temperature, route, and airport conditions
  • Required veterinary or health documentation
  • The availability of handlers and receiving-care arrangements
  • Rules imposed by the particular airline, airport, aircraft, or jurisdiction

Why the kennel is a safety-critical part of the mission

The kennel is not just a container for moving an animal from one airport to another. It is the physical link between animal welfare and aviation logistics. A poorly sized or inadequately secured crate can create risks during lifting, loading, turbulence, delays, and handoffs.

For anyone preparing equipment, an airline-approved pet crate is the most directly relevant product category. USDA APHIS guidance describes an air-transport kennel as appropriately sized, hard-sided, securely fastened, adequately ventilated, clean, and equipped with sturdy handles or handholds that allow it to be lifted without tilting.

A practical pre-purchase checklist includes:

  • Correct internal size: the animal must have enough room for the applicable travel requirements, not merely enough space to fit inside.
  • Hard-sided construction: the kennel should be suitable for the aircraft, handling process, and current transport rules.
  • Secure fasteners: doors and joining hardware must remain closed during handling and flight.
  • Ventilation: air openings should support suitable airflow without creating an escape or injury hazard.
  • Sturdy handholds: handlers need to lift and move the kennel without tilting it or putting fingers near an escape point.
  • Food and water provisions: containers must be accessible and appropriate for the animal and route.
  • Identification and routing information: labels and document holders can help keep the animal’s records and destination clear during transfers.

“Airline-approved” is not a universal guarantee. Airlines can impose their own rules for kennel dimensions, animal age, temperature, seating or cargo arrangements, fees, and documentation. The rescue coordinator should confirm the particular aircraft, route, animal, and current carrier requirements before buying or using a crate.

Animal-welfare details that matter in transit

USDA APHIS handling guidance addresses care during transport, including access to food and potable water at required intervals, observation when possible, protection from physical harm or distress, and suitable air, temperature, humidity, and pressurization conditions.

The guidance also addresses how animals are housed during transport. Unrelated animals should not be placed in direct contact, and the number of animals in a kennel must be appropriate to the applicable rules and circumstances.

CDC travel guidance adds two practical points for dogs: give the dog a chance to relieve itself before securing it for travel, and close the crate door securely without locking it. Staff may need to open the kennel in an emergency. These details show why a rescue flight requires preparation and animal-care planning—not simply a seat on an aircraft.

How volunteer pilots participate

Volunteer pilots contribute aircraft access, flight time, planning, and operating experience. They do not replace the rescue’s responsibility for animal care or the handler’s responsibility for a safe transfer.

Pilots N Paws’ materials direct pilots and other volunteers to use the organization’s discussion board and review posted opportunities. The result is a distributed network rather than a fixed fleet with centrally scheduled aircraft.

The organization also says that an FAA Chief Counsel position treated qualifying rescue flights as humanitarian for its pilots. That statement should not be expanded into a general promise about tax treatment. Whether a pilot can deduct particular expenses depends on the facts and current tax rules; anyone considering a deduction should consult a qualified tax professional.

How to support Pilots N Paws

Support can take several forms, including volunteering, helping with ground logistics, contributing to animal-transport equipment, or donating to the organization. Pilots N Paws’ published information identifies needs and activities that include transportable crates, pilot education, insurance, community education, website management, brochures, and office supplies.

Aviation businesses, flight schools, fixed-base operators, event organizers, and pet-travel-equipment companies may also see opportunities to provide in-kind assistance or sponsorship. However, the available organizational information does not establish a formal affiliate, preferred-vendor, or commercial sponsorship program. A business should contact Pilots N Paws directly before presenting itself as an approved partner or promising support through a particular arrangement.

What Pilots N Paws is—and is not

It is It is not
A volunteer coordination network A commercial airline
A way for rescues and pilots to find one another A company with a guaranteed national fleet
A system that may organize multi-leg relays A promise that every animal flies directly to its destination
One part of a larger rescue operation An adoption agency or substitute for veterinary and transport planning

Why the model matters

Pilots N Paws turns general aviation into a volunteer transport resource. Its distinctive contribution is not simply that pilots fly animals. It is that pilots, rescuers, airport handlers, foster homes, drivers, and receiving organizations form a relay in which every successful handoff matters.

What animals does Pilots N Paws transport?

The organization’s published media material says flights have carried dogs, cats, pigs, reptiles, rabbits, and other animals that can be transported by plane. Eligibility depends on the animal, aircraft, route, health, weather, kennel, and applicable rules.

What kind of crate is needed for a Pilots N Paws flight?

The crate must be matched to the animal, aircraft, route, and current rules. USDA APHIS guidance emphasizes appropriate sizing, hard-sided construction, secure fasteners, ventilation, sturdy handholds, food and water provisions, and required identification or routing information. Airline-specific rules must also be checked.

Are volunteer rescue flights tax-deductible?

Pilots N Paws says an FAA Chief Counsel position treated qualifying rescue flights as humanitarian for its pilots. That does not determine every person’s tax treatment. Pilots should obtain current advice from a qualified tax professional before claiming deductions.

The Bottom Line

Pilots N Paws helps rescue animals travel by coordinating volunteer pilots with rescues and ground handlers. Its missions may involve several aircraft and many handoffs, so safe transport depends on careful planning, suitable kennels, current carrier or regulatory requirements, and a receiving organization ready to continue the animal’s care.
