Which IRIS USA model is reviewed?
This review covers the black IRIS USA Top Entry Cat Litter Box with Scoop, SKU 589653. IRIS USA lists overall dimensions of 20.5 inches long, 14.75 inches wide, and 14.5 inches high; a 9.25-inch-diameter opening; a 15 × 9.75-inch bottom; and capacity for up to 20 pounds of litter. The manufacturer’s page displayed $27.99 when accessed in October 2026, but price and availability can change.

Do not treat every IRIS USA top-entry box as having those dimensions. The separate SKU 585115 listing gives a larger footprint of 20.47 × 16.14 × 14.56 inches and describes non-skid feet. Those figures belong to that variant, not the black SKU 589653 reviewed here.
Does the design reduce litter mess?
IRIS USA’s stated purpose for the high walls and grooved lid is to contain scatter and catch litter from paws. The company says, “The grooves in the lid catch any lingering litter particles from your cat’s paws and keep them from spilling out onto the floor, keeping the area neat and clean.” That is manufacturer copy describing intended performance, not a guarantee that tracking or scatter will stop.

The removable lid and included scoop make ordinary scooping and access for cleaning more straightforward in principle. Cats.com reviewer Liz Coleman, whose review was last updated September 28, 2025, liked the box’s discreet appearance and removable lid, and saw potential for less scatter. Her observations about fit and handling were less positive: she found the tabs awkward to remove, and reported that they released when she carried a filled box by the entry. She also noted the absence of handles. Those are findings from one reviewer, not evidence of a universal defect; they do make it sensible to lift the box from its base rather than rely on the lid or opening when it is full.
Will your cat use a top-entry box?
Top entry changes the task: a cat must jump onto the lid and pass through the opening. On SKU 589653, the opening is 9.25 inches across and the box stands 14.5 inches high. Measure the cat’s body and compare it with the actual opening and usable floor space before buying, particularly if the cat is large.

Cats.com’s testing account is a useful caution, not a prediction for every household. Coleman tested the box at home for several weeks with two cats; both ultimately refused to use it. She used water to simulate deposits when assessing clumping, scooping, and cleaning after the cats would not use it. The review also includes customer reports of successful adjustment as well as concerns about lid fit. Together, these accounts suggest that acceptance depends on the individual cat; they do not establish a general success or failure rate.

It cautioned that older, overweight, nervous, or less-mobile cats, and very small kittens, may struggle with the jump or opening. If your cat hesitates, do not assume it will eventually adapt: make sure it has a familiar, accessible litter option while you judge its response.

What should you check before buying?
- Entry and interior: Compare the 9.25-inch opening and 15 × 9.75-inch bottom listed for SKU 589653 with your cat’s size and posture.
- Jump and mobility: Consider whether your cat can comfortably reach the lid and descend through the opening without strain.
- Preference: A cat accustomed to open or front-entry trays may reject an enclosed top-entry design.
- Lid and handling: The lid is removable, but tabs and full-box carrying drew concerns in one review. Plan to lift the base for moving and emptying.
- Variant details: Confirm the SKU, dimensions, color, and included accessories on the listing you are purchasing; specifications for SKU 585115 are not interchangeable with SKU 589653.
Does it keep dogs out or control odor?
The tall enclosed sides may make it harder for another pet to reach litter, and the covered form can obscure the contents. Neither feature proves that a determined dog cannot get in, and the sources do not establish that the box eliminates odor. Treat containment as a possible benefit, not a guarantee; supervise interactions and keep the box clean as usual.
