Neither wet nor dry cat food is universally better for a healthy cat. Choose a food that is complete and balanced for your cat’s life stage, then weigh moisture, calories, acceptance, cost, and the feeding routine you can maintain. Wet food supplies much more water; dry food is convenient and often less expensive. A combination can also work. If your cat has a diagnosed condition, ask your veterinarian which diet fits the treatment plan rather than choosing by format alone.
How wet and dry food compare
| Factor | Wet or canned food | Dry food | What it means for your choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water content | Cornell reports canned food contains at least 75% water; its broader estimate for typical wet food is 70–80%. | Cornell reports dry food contains 6–10% water. | Wet food contributes more water through meals. Keep fresh water available with either format. |
| Calories by food weight | Its high moisture content lowers energy density per 100 grams, according to VCA’s comparison of cat-food formats. | More calorie-dense by weight in that comparison. | Use the food’s calorie information and measured portions; bowl volume alone is not a reliable guide. |
| Convenience and storage | Unopened cans store well; refrigerate opened leftovers. | Easy to serve and may be left available for some cats, but store it sealed in a cool, dry place and use it while fresh. | Choose a format your household can serve and store safely and consistently. |
| Acceptance | Many cats find it appealing, and texture variety may help some picky eaters. | Some cats prefer kibble; others may find it less palatable. | A cat needs to eat enough of the chosen diet. Preference matters. |
| Cost | Generally more expensive. | Relatively inexpensive. | Compare the cost of the amount your cat actually eats, not just package prices. |
Start with nutritional adequacy, not the format
Look for a statement that the food is complete and balanced for your cat’s life stage. Cornell describes AAFCO nutritional standards as a basis for commercial cat-food requirements and recommends checking package nutrition information. A product labeled as cat food is not necessarily intended to be the sole diet: some canned products are treats or supplemental foods. For kittens, choose food intended for growth rather than assuming any wet or dry food is appropriate. Cornell’s guide to feeding cats and VCA’s kitten food guidance explain these label and life-stage considerations.

Ingredient lists can help identify what is in a food, but they do not by themselves establish that the diet is complete, balanced, or best for an individual cat. The WSAVA guide to interpreting food labels notes that ingredients are listed in descending order by weight as formulated. Check the nutritional adequacy statement and calorie information as well.

Wet food’s main practical advantage is its water content. Cornell reports that wet food may contain up to 80% water and that cats eating it may drink less than cats eating dry food, who generally take in more water by drinking. Fresh water should remain available either way. Cornell’s general educational estimate is about 4 ounces of water per 5 pounds of lean body weight per day, including water from food; it is not an individualized target, and needs vary with health, activity, environment, and diet. See Cornell’s hydration guidance.

Wet food can also let a cat eat a larger portion by weight for the same calories because water lowers energy density. That does not make portion size irrelevant: check calories and feed an amount suited to your cat. Wet food may suit cats that prefer its texture or need a way to take in more dietary water, but a health concern still calls for veterinary advice about the appropriate diet.
When dry food may be a better fit
Dry food is convenient, relatively inexpensive, and can be left available for cats that manage their intake well. However, free-choice feeding can lead some cats to overeat. Measure portions when weight or calorie intake is a concern, and follow the feeding guidance appropriate to your cat rather than leaving an unlimited supply by default.

Store kibble sealed in a cool, dry place, check the expiration date, and avoid buying more than you can use while it is fresh. Cornell notes that dry food may be less palatable and, depending on its formulation and ingredients, less digestible. A cat that refuses it or eats too little needs a different workable plan, not a forced format choice.
How to decide for a cat with a health condition
For urinary disease, kidney disease, diabetes, dental pain, poor appetite, weight concerns, or another diagnosed problem, the nutrient profile and clinical plan matter more than whether the food is wet or dry. More dietary water may be useful in some situations, but it does not replace a disease-specific diet. Cornell notes that kidney diets are available in both wet and dry forms; do not reject a veterinarian-recommended diet solely because of its format. See Cornell’s overview of chronic kidney disease in cats.

Ask your veterinarian which nutritional targets matter for your cat, whether a therapeutic diet is needed, and how to transition to it. A sudden change in drinking or concern about dehydration also warrants veterinary attention. Claims that all wet food is lower in carbohydrate, prevents diabetes, or is automatically better for weight loss are not established by format alone; compare the actual diet and calories instead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you feed both wet and dry food?
Yes. Cornell notes that some cats eat wet food, some eat dry food, and some eat a combination. Mixed feeding can accommodate preference and routine, but count calories from both foods toward the cat’s daily intake. Introduce changes in a way your cat accepts and monitor appetite and body condition. If a medical diet is involved, confirm with the veterinarian that the combination still meets the treatment plan.
