Is It Okay to Keep a Betta Fish in a Bowl?

A small bowl restricts swimming and makes stable water harder to maintain. See the recommended aquarium size and essential betta care setup.

No—not as a permanent home. A small bowl gives a betta less room to swim and makes it harder to keep water warm, clean, and stable. Choose a covered aquarium of at least 20 L where feasible, with a heater and gentle filtration.

Why a small bowl is not a good permanent home

A bowl’s small volume can change temperature and water quality quickly. Its shape and limited space can also make it difficult to fit effective filtration and leave less water surface for oxygen exchange. Water that looks clear is not proof that it is safe.

In a 2024 study, Ronald G. Oldfield and Emily K. Murphy compared male bettas kept individually in 0.5 L bowls and 10, 38, and 208 L aquaria. Fish in the bowls spent less time swimming, while fish in enriched containers swam more often. The authors concluded that at least 10 L was needed for full expression of swimming behaviour under the study’s conditions. That finding describes the tested setup; it is not a universal legal minimum or a guarantee of good welfare at 10 L. Read the study in Animal Welfare (2024).

For practical care, aim for a 20 L or larger aquarium rather than treating the study’s 10 L result as a recommended target. Published recommendations differ:

AQUANEAT Fish Tank, 1 Gallon Betta Fish Tank, Small Aquarium Kit with LED Light and Water Filter Pump
  • Compact: Dimension: 7.9"x5.9"x5.9"; 1 Gallon tank; ideal for small spaces, aquarium beginners caring for a single betta, a few shrimp, snails, or a tiny goldfish. Also works as a temporary hospital tank, quarantine tank, or desktop decor (After deducting the filter part, the actual usable volume is approximately 0.8 gal and it will further decrease after adding substrate)
  • Customizable Lighting: features a 3-color LED hood with 10 adjustable brightness levels to showcase your fish and tank décor
  • Self-Cleaning Filtration: Hidden filter keeps tank clean for easier maintenance. Note: Clean filter sponge and pump regularly to avoid clogging; regular water changes are required — this small tank does not support zero-maintenance use
  • Thoughtful Design: its top feeding hole allows for easy feeding without removing the lid; four silicone feet for stability and quiet operation
  • Complete Starter Kit: 1x 1 gallon Fish Tank, 1x Filter Sponge, 1x Adjustable Water Pump, 1x LED Hood (Note: The light requires a power transformer (not included) for use. Compatible transformers include 5V 0.5A, 5V 1A, 5V 1.5A, and 5V 2A)
Source Published size guidance How to interpret it
RSPCA Queensland (2020) At least 15 L; 20 L or more is ideal. An organizational care recommendation.
RSPCA Australia (current care page; undated) 20 L or more is ideal. An organizational care recommendation.
Oldfield and Murphy (2024) At least 10 L for full swimming behaviour in the tested conditions. A behavioural finding, not a general tank-size rule.

Volume alone does not ensure good care. A larger, appropriately equipped aquarium gives you more room to provide stable conditions, swimming space, and enrichment.

What a betta aquarium needs

  • A secure cover: Bettas can jump, so use a lid.
  • A heater and thermometer: Keep the water warm and check its temperature. RSPCA Queensland gives about 24°C; RSPCA Australia advises 24–26°C. Use a thermostatic heater suited to the aquarium.
  • Gentle filtration: Use a suitable filter with adjustable or otherwise gentle flow. Bettas prefer low flow, and a strong current can make swimming difficult.
  • Enrichment and cover: Provide plants or other suitable furnishings while leaving open swimming space. The study found more swimming in enriched containers.

RSPCA guidance describes bowls and jars as unsuitable decorative tanks because they are not designed with fish welfare in mind. Their small size also limits the equipment and stable conditions a betta needs. See the RSPCA’s fish-care guidance.

Tetra LED Half Moon 1.1 Gallon Fish Tank Kit for Betta Fish
  • HALF MOON AQUARIUM KIT: Clear plastic, half-moon-shaped front allows for unobstructed viewing.
  • IDEAL FOR BETTAS: Bettas require minimal maintenance and make great species for beginners.
  • MOVABLE LIGHT: Energy-efficient LEDs can be positioned to light tank from above or below.
  • CONVENIENT FEEDING: Clear canopy has a hole to make feeding fish easy.
  • PERFECT FOR BEGINNERS: Small aquariums like this 1.1-gallon tank are a great way to get started in the freshwater fishkeeping hobby.

How to prepare and check the water

  1. Set up and fishless-cycle the aquarium before adding the fish. Cycling establishes beneficial filter bacteria; RSPCA guidance recommends cycling a new aquarium before stocking it.
  2. Dechlorinate tap water. Chlorine is dangerous to fish and beneficial filter bacteria. Use a dechlorinating water conditioner as directed.
  3. Test the water. Check ammonia and nitrite; RSPCA guidance specifies 0 mg/L for each. Clear-looking water can still have unsafe readings.
  4. Match replacement-water temperature. Bring new water close to the aquarium’s temperature to reduce temperature shock during water changes.
  5. Check the heater with a thermometer. Adjust the heater if needed to keep the water within the appropriate warm range.

These water-preparation and testing recommendations are set out in the RSPCA’s aquarium guidance.

Can male bettas share a bowl or aquarium?

Keep male bettas separately. In Oldfield and Murphy’s study, larger aquaria reduced some approaches and aggressive displays between paired males, but did not prevent attacks. The authors cautioned that even very large aquaria cannot guarantee peaceful cohabitation. More space or visual cover is not a reliable reason to house males together.

If your betta is already in a bowl

Plan a move to a covered aquarium of at least 20 L where feasible, equipped with a thermostatic heater and gentle filtration. Prepare and cycle the new aquarium, dechlorinate its water, and verify water quality before transferring the fish. Avoid treating a clear bowl or a single water change as a substitute for stable, tested conditions.
