No. A ball of yarn is not a safe toy to leave with a cat. If swallowed, its long, thin strands can act as a linear foreign body: one end may lodge while the intestines move and bunch along the material. This can injure or even perforate the intestinal wall. Keep yarn and similar stringy items out of reach, and contact a veterinarian promptly if your cat may have swallowed any.
Why yarn is dangerous for cats
The risk comes from yarn’s shape, not just its material. Veterinarians classify yarn alongside string and tinsel as a linear foreign body. A strand may catch under the tongue or lodge farther along the digestive tract. As the intestines move, they can bunch along the strand, which may abrade or cut the intestinal wall.

What to do if your cat may have swallowed yarn
- Call your veterinarian promptly. Explain what may have been swallowed, when it happened, and whether your cat is showing symptoms. A veterinarian can advise you on what to do next; do not wait for symptoms if ingestion is suspected. VCA: Ingestion of Foreign Bodies in Cats
- Do not pull on string that is protruding from your cat’s anus. Pulling can cause injury; seek veterinary help instead. VCA: Linear Foreign Body in Cats
- Watch for warning signs and report them. These can include vomiting, refusing food or eating less, lethargy, dehydration, abdominal discomfort, hiding, or pawing at the mouth. How to choose safer toys
Choose toys made for cat play rather than yarn, thread, dental floss, ribbon, or other long, stringy household items. The ASPCA recommends a stuffed catnip toy or a ball too large to swallow. - Pick a ball that is too large for your cat to swallow.
- Consider whether your cat chews or shreds toys; avoid items that can come apart into swallowable pieces.
- Check for strings or detachable parts, and supervise play when they are present.
- Put wand toys away after play rather than leaving them out for unsupervised access.
No toy is guaranteed risk-free for every cat. A toy’s suitability depends in part on its size relative to your cat’s mouth and whether your cat tends to chew or shred it.
How common is swallowing string?
In a 2022 report, ASPCA Animal Hospital said it performed 114 foreign-body removal surgeries in 2020 and 105 in 2021. These are counts from that hospital, not estimates of how often cats generally swallow foreign objects.
