PerthNow reported a shark warning near Jurien Bay Boat Harbour on 8 July 2025 after a whale carcass was seen floating close to shore. The Shire of Dandaragan reportedly closed the beach for 1 km north and 1 km south of the carcass. This is a dated report, not confirmation that the warning or closure remains in force.
What prompted the warning?
PerthNow said the whale carcass was reported at 8:35am on Tuesday, 8 July 2025, in Jurien Bay Boat Harbour. Parks and Wildlife Service officers from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions considered it possible the carcass could attract sharks close to shore. The report did not say that a shark had been sighted.

The Shire of Dandaragan reportedly closed the nearby beach for 1 km north and 1 km south of the carcass. Swimmers, surfers and other water users were urged to take extra care, while Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development officers and staff from other agencies monitored the situation. Is the Jurien Bay warning still active?
Do not treat the 2025 beach closure as current. The Government of Western Australia’s SharkSmart current alerts page, checked on 4 October 2026, listed alerts for other locations but no Jurien Bay Boat Harbour alert. That page snapshot does not establish when the 2025 closure ended or whether a local advisory appeared through another channel.

What should people do if a shark is sighted?
- Stay out of any area subject to an official closure and follow instructions from rangers, Parks and Wildlife Service officers and Surf Life Saving WA.
- Check current official alerts before making a decision about swimming, surfing or other water activities.
- Report a shark sighting to Water Police on 9442 8600, as advised in the PerthNow report.
