A kangaroo hopped into the Albany Bunnings in November 2024, but the incident does not prove that urban wildlife sightings are rising across Western Australia. WA Wildlife told PerthNow its team was seeing native animals more often in commercial areas, citing habitat change, accessible food and increased public reporting. The available reporting does not include statewide data measuring a trend.
What happened at Albany Bunnings?
The kangaroo entered the store through its drive-through area just after opening in November 2024. Shopper Lisa Gungor filmed the visit. Bunnings regional manager Danielle Walker told PerthNow that staff ushered the animal out safely and kept customers at a distance. The report did not say the kangaroo was injured. PerthNow published its account on 16 December 2024.

Why might kangaroos and other native animals enter commercial areas?
Dean Huxley, chief executive of WA Wildlife, told PerthNow that development reduces and fragments native vegetation, which can lead wildlife to seek food and shelter in areas used by people. He said accessible food may also attract kangaroos, including grass around commercial sites and food waste.

Huxley also pointed to greater public awareness and social media as reasons encounters may be reported more frequently. More reports do not necessarily mean more encounters: a change in how often people notice or share wildlife visits can affect what appears to be a trend.
Is there evidence that urban wildlife sightings are increasing across WA?
The PerthNow report records WA Wildlife’s observations, but the sources available do not provide a dated dataset establishing a statewide increase in the number or rate of urban wildlife sightings. To demonstrate such a trend, data would need to compare encounters over time and account for where they occurred, changes in habitat, and changes in reporting volume.

- Mini Flopsies are designed to lay resting on its belly for easy, fun play

That distinction matters: a wildlife organisation seeing or hearing about more animals in commercial areas is a useful observation, but it is not, by itself, a measured statewide trend.
What should you do if you see an injured kangaroo in Western Australia?
Do not approach or try to catch it. The WA Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) warns that injured kangaroos may be dangerous because they can kick and have sharp claws. Keep people and pets away, and contact the Wildcare Helpline for advice if the animal appears to need help. The helpline can advise callers about sick, injured or displaced native wildlife and refer them to registered rehabilitators.
