Perth woman Haylee Owens said she was bitten in the face by a friend’s dog she had known since it was a puppy. Her warning, reported by PerthNow in October 2024, is to stay mindful of how close you get—even with a familiar dog. Her account does not establish why the dog bit.
What happened to Haylee Owens?
PerthNow reporter Kayla Sellwood reported that Owens, then 19 and from Ballajura, was visiting a friend at the friend’s home in Noranda with two other people on the Sunday before the report was published on 2 October 2024. The friend’s four-year-old Rottweiler, Ninja, bit Owens in the face. Owens told PerthNow she had known Ninja since he was a puppy and had visited him often.

“It all just happened so fast. I was giving him cuddles, my friend was behind him, I was in front and he jumped at me and bit me on the face,” Owens told PerthNow.

What warning did Owens share?
“You never know what’s going through their minds or bodies,” Owens said. “It only takes a second (for the dog) to react, so just be mindful of how close you get.” She was describing her own experience, not offering a scientific explanation for why dogs bite.
PerthNow also reported that Owens remained close to Ninja and visited him after the incident, while her parents were uneasy. Her personal decision should not be taken as a measure of safety for other people or dogs.

Can a dog you know still bite?
Owens’s account shows that she said she was bitten by a dog she had known since puppyhood. It cannot show why Ninja bit, or establish that familiarity predicts whether a dog will bite. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) puts the broader point plainly: “Any dog can bite: big or small, male or female, young or old.” Breed alone cannot determine how an individual dog will behave in a particular situation.
How to approach dogs more safely
The AVMA recommends letting a dog choose whether to interact and avoiding situations that may make a dog uncomfortable. Its guidance includes:

- Ask an unfamiliar dog’s owner before petting it.
- Approach calmly; avoid direct or looming approaches, and do not force contact.
- Give a dog space when it is eating, sleeping, or caring for puppies.
- Watch for possible signs of discomfort, such as turning away, stiffening, growling, or moving out of reach. These signs can vary and are not a perfect prediction of a bite.
- Never leave a baby or small child alone with a dog; an adult should actively supervise.
These are general AVMA recommendations, not an explanation of Owens’s incident.
