The 2022 headline refers to a 38-year-old woman seriously injured by a freshwater crocodile at Butler Cove, Lake Argyle—not the separate attack reported at Hicks Passage in 2026. After Parks and Wildlife staff removed an animal they identified as a “problem animal,” organizers said the 2022 Lake Argyle Swim would go ahead. The event’s decision was not a government declaration that swimming in crocodile habitat is safe.
What happened at Butler Cove in 2022?
PerthNow reported on 5 May 2022 that a 38-year-old woman was on a flotation device at Butler Cove on the Monday before the Lake Argyle Swim when a freshwater crocodile attacked her, causing serious leg injuries. The account is contemporaneous journalism, not an official incident notice. PerthNow’s report said Parks and Wildlife Service staff patrolled the area the following day. They saw a crocodile of similar size approach and interact with their vessel, and judged its behaviour consistent with that of a “problem animal.” Staff removed it for public safety.

Why did the Lake Argyle Swim go ahead?
After the animal was removed, event organiser Glenn Taylor said, “(The Lake Argyle Swim) is absolutely still going ahead.” That was the organizer’s decision about the 2022 event in response to the reported incident. The available account does not establish a quantified reduction in risk or show that authorities declared open-water swimming safe.
How was the separate 2026 attack handled?
A different incident occurred at Hicks Passage on the Friday evening before the May 2026 event. ABC Kimberley reported that four people were bitten by a suspected freshwater crocodile while a group was swimming from a houseboat. A man in his 60s was flown to Royal Perth Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The four people involved were not the woman injured in 2022. ABC’s 4 May 2026 report said more than 400 swimmers took part the next day after organizers changed the 20 km route to avoid the area. Taylor said, “We sprung into action straight away because the safety of our swimmers is paramount,” and explained that teams were told they would swim a different 20 km course away from the location. DBCA said it would monitor the situation and conduct patrols.

Does an event going ahead mean Lake Argyle is safe to swim in?
No such assurance follows from the event proceeding. Western Australia’s Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) says crocodiles occur in freshwater rivers and billabongs in the State’s north. Its guidance warns that crocodiles may remain hidden for long periods and that the absence of a warning sign does not mean they are absent. It advises avoiding the water’s edge where possible, notes that children and pets are particularly at risk, and says to contact Parks and Wildlife Service if unsure. The DBCA flyer advises: “If in doubt do not swim, canoe or use small boats where crocodiles may live.” See the DBCA crocodile guide and safety information.
