How can I tell whether my kitten wants more—or wants a break?
Look for active, calm participation: your kitten stays near you or solicits more contact without appearing uncomfortable. Moving away or acting avoidant is a request for a break. Stop rather than following, holding on, or treating stillness as proof that the kitten is comfortable.
Pause or end the interaction if your kitten seems overwhelmed, uncomfortable, avoidant, or highly energetic. Let it rest or retreat. When it is in a playful, high-energy mood, redirect it with a wand-type toy rather than trying to pet it or using your hands as toys. Supervise wand play; string or elastic toys can catch around a kitten’s neck or leg if left unattended.

How should I introduce lifting and handling?
Once your kitten is comfortable with gentle strokes, introduce brief, secure lifting practice. Support its whole body with two hands: one under the bottom and one under the front legs. Hold it close to your body, then set it down before it becomes distressed. Never pick a kitten up by the scruff.

How should children interact with a kitten?
Keep children’s contact limited and supervised at first. Have young children sit on the floor while they learn to handle the kitten. This makes a fall less likely to cause a serious injury and lets the kitten approach or move away more easily.
Is it too late if my kitten is past the early socialisation period?
No. International Cat Care identifies the feline sensitive socialisation period as two to seven or eight weeks (2024 booklet, pp. 18–19), but describes this as a sensitive period, not a deadline. Many kittens arrive in new homes later. Calm, positive socialisation and habituation can continue after adoption and through adolescence; the age window does not guarantee a particular temperament.

Individual kittens differ in how much handling they enjoy. As International Cat Care explains, “Every cat is an individual, and some kittens will enjoy handling more than others, so go at your kitten’s pace rather than forcing interaction.” (Caring for your new kitten (2024), p. 12.)
What if my kitten continues to avoid touch?
Do not respond to avoidance with more exposure or restraint. Too much exposure without a positive experience may contribute to anxiety. Give your kitten space and try again another time with a brief, low-pressure interaction. If touch remains difficult, ask a veterinarian for guidance; they may refer you to a suitably qualified positive-reinforcement behavior professional or trainer.
