Catnip is the herb Nepeta cataria. Many cats respond to its scent by sniffing, rubbing, licking, chewing, or rolling, but the reaction varies: some cats become playful or stimulated, some appear sedated, and others show little or no response. Catnip is optional enrichment, not something every cat needs.
What is catnip, and why do cats react to it?
Catnip is a perennial herb called Nepeta cataria. Sources associate cats’ response to it with nepetalactone, a compound in the plant. Cats Protection explains that when a cat sniffs catnip, the compound enters nasal tissue and is associated with a sensory response. The detailed mechanism is not firmly established, and the organization notes that catnip’s effects have not been extensively researched.

A response may include sniffing, rubbing, licking, chewing, rolling, or other noticeable changes in behavior. It does not always look like a burst of energy: ASPCA says some cats become stimulated while others become sedated.

No. Some cats show little or no obvious response. Cats Protection has published two different estimates: its earlier explainer says around 70–80% of domestic cats respond, while a 2020 item gives a range of around 50–70%. These are attributed estimates, not a settled universal statistic or a scientific consensus.

A non-response is within the normal range described by these sources. If your cat does react, its behavior may still differ from another cat’s; a lack of rolling or playfulness does not by itself mean anything is wrong.
How long does a catnip reaction last?
Cats Protection says the response to sniffed catnip usually lasts around ten minutes. It says cats may then be temporarily less responsive to catnip for 30–60 minutes. Treat these as typical guidance, not a timer that applies to every cat.

How can you use catnip as enrichment?
Try a small amount as an invitation to explore or play, rather than expecting a particular behavior or using it to force a change. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine suggests placing catnip on or around a scratching post to entice a cat to use it. A catnip toy is another option for enrichment. Neither approach is guaranteed to work, especially for a cat that does not respond to catnip.
- Offer a catnip toy and let your cat choose whether to engage with it.
- To encourage scratching-post use, place catnip on or near the post.
- Check toys for small pieces or string-like parts that could detach and be swallowed; Cornell advises avoiding those hazards.
Catnip may also be grown as a garden plant. Cats Protection includes Nepeta cataria among plants it describes as safe for cats, but a cat affected by catnip near a road may face a practical hazard. Keep an eye on your cat’s surroundings rather than assuming that a short-lived effect makes the setting safe.

Is catnip safe for cats to eat?
Safety guidance differs. Cats Protection says a small amount eaten is safe, while noting that eating catnip does not produce the same effects as sniffing it. ASPCA lists catnip as toxic to cats, identifies nepetalactone as its toxic principle, and warns that vomiting and diarrhea may occur. ASPCA also reports that cats can become stimulated or sedated.
Those sources do not support a blanket assurance that every amount or preparation is harmless. If your cat becomes unwell or has eaten a concerning amount, contact your veterinarian or an animal poison-control service for advice.

What if your cat does not respond?
You do not need to make catnip part of your cat’s routine. If your cat ignores it, put it away and use other forms of play or enrichment instead. If your cat responds, keep the experience optional and supervise play with toys that could shed small or string-like parts.
