Six-week-old Ezra Mansoor died after the family’s Husky attacked him while he slept in his crib in Knoxville, Tennessee, according to the family’s account reported by ABC7 Los Angeles/CNN Wire on May 31, 2024. A contemporaneous report said the Knox County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the death and an investigation, but no official finding or current case disposition is established by the available reporting.
What was reported about Ezra Mansoor’s death?
ABC7 Los Angeles, carrying CNN Wire reporting dated May 31, 2024, identified the infant as Ezra Mansoor and reported that he was six weeks old when the family dog attacked him as he slept in his crib in Knoxville. The report attributed the description of the attack to the family. It said the Husky had lived in the home for eight years and was taken to a local animal center after the incident. Those details are reported accounts, not an independently published investigative finding.

Ezra’s mother, Chloe Mansoor, said: “Being his mom was the biggest honor and the best thing I’ve ever done.” She also described the family’s experience as “Completely unprovoked” and said she wanted to raise awareness that “it could be any dog at any time.” That was her appeal based on this family’s experience, not a scientific conclusion about dogs generally.

A contemporaneous USA TODAY report syndicated by Yahoo News said Knox County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kimberly Glenn confirmed Ezra’s death and said details were confidential because a juvenile was involved. The coverage cited here does not establish whether the investigation later concluded or what its findings were. It also does not establish charges, an official cause of death, or the dog’s eventual disposition.

How can families reduce risk when babies and dogs share a home?
Supervise and manage access
The CDC advises: “Always supervise young children around dogs, even trusted family pets.” Its guidance notes that any dog can bite, including when scared, nervous, eating, playing, or protecting toys or puppies. In practice, an adult should remain attentive and close enough to intervene whenever a baby and dog are together. If an adult cannot actively supervise, keep them physically separated; do not rely on breed, familiarity, a dog’s past behavior, or a product as a guarantee of safety.
Keep safe sleep and animal access distinct
Tennessee’s Department of Health recommends that babies sleep alone, on their backs, in a crib on a firm mattress with a fitted sheet, without pillows, blankets, soft toys, or bumper pads, and in a separate sleep space in the parents’ room. CDC guidance supporting the 2022 American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations likewise calls for placing babies on their backs for every sleep, using a firm, flat surface in a safety-approved crib with a fitted sheet, room-sharing ideally until at least six months, and keeping soft bedding out.

These steps address sleep-related risks; they do not make a crib a barrier that guarantees a pet cannot reach an infant. Families need to consider both a baby’s sleep environment and whether a dog can access that space.

Tennessee Department of Health’s 2024 report counted 142 sleep-related infant deaths in the state in 2022; 103, or 73%, were assessed as preventable. The report also recorded 100 cases in which an infant was not found sleeping in a crib or bassinet and 98 in which unsafe bedding or toys were present in the sleep area. Multiple contributing factors can apply to a death, so factor counts may exceed the total number of deaths.
