The figures behind the appeal are dated year-to-date intake counts—not a live headcount or a measure of shelter capacity.
Why McKamey Animal Center is asking for help
In an October 5, 2026 report, The Pulse said MAC had impounded more than 400 animals so far that year, a 160% increase over the same period in 2025. The report also said the center had received nearly 4,000 animals as strays or owner surrenders, more than 10% above the previous year.
Those are intake figures reported as of October 5, not the number of animals currently at the shelter. The report says some animals stay at the facility for extended periods while court cases proceed, adding pressure to available space. For context, MAC’s official homepage says 4,876 animals entered its care in 2025; that full-year figure is not directly comparable to a partial-year 2026 count.
MAC Director of Animal Protection Seth Watson told The Pulse that many animals, especially larger dogs, are affected by broader pressures such as rising grocery and fuel costs, limited affordable pet-friendly housing, and increasing veterinary costs.
