Choose a complete-and-balanced food for the correct life stage, adjust portions to your animal’s body condition and weight trend, and count treats and other extras. Ask your veterinary team to help tailor the plan, particularly for a growing pet, a pet with a health problem, or one whose weight is changing.
How to choose a food that fits your pet
Start with the package’s nutritional adequacy statement, not its marketing language. Check that the food is intended for your pet’s species and life stage, and determine whether it is a complete diet or is labeled only for intermittent or supplemental feeding. A complete-and-balanced statement indicates that a commercial food is intended to provide required nutrients in appropriate ratios for long-term feeding at the specified life stage. Label requirements can vary by location; the statement and rules discussed here are relevant to the product’s market.
Read the feeding directions and calorie information, but treat the package amount as a starting point. Manufacturers’ feeding recommendations are not standardized calculations of an individual pet’s maintenance needs. Monitor weight, body condition, and muscle condition, then discuss adjustments with your veterinary team.
Look beyond the ingredient list
An ingredient list alone cannot establish a food’s overall quality. The WSAVA Global Nutrition Committee cautions that it gives no information about ingredient quality and can be misleading. Terms such as “premium” and “holistic” also have little practical value for assessing nutritional adequacy. Instead, ask the manufacturer who formulates the food and what qualifications they have, what quality-control checks it performs, and whether it has conducted nutrition research. How much should you feed?
There is no single calorie target or portion that suits every dog or cat. A useful plan considers life stage, body and muscle condition, weight trend, activity, environment, current food, treats, and health. Use the feeding directions as a place to begin, then have the veterinary team help assess whether the amount is appropriate for your pet.
Count treats and every other extra
Include treats, table food, supplements, and other extras when considering total intake. For healthy pets at an appropriate weight, the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) recommends that the main complete-and-balanced diet provide at least 90% of total intake, with treats and other foods making up no more than 10%. This is a guideline for that group, not a universal prescription—pets with medical needs may require an individualized plan. AAHA’s 2021 Nutrition and Weight Management Guidelines explain the patient-specific approach.

A pet may maintain its weight while getting too much of its intake from extras that are not nutritionally balanced. A food puzzle feeder or automated feeder can be an optional way to manage access and portions; AAHA also notes potential activity benefits for dogs and enrichment or behavior-modification benefits for cats. These tools do not replace choosing an appropriate diet or setting a suitable amount.
Do puppies and kittens need different food?
Yes. Growing animals need a diet appropriate for growth until skeletal maturity. AAHA gives about one year as typical for cats and small or medium-sized dogs; some large and giant dogs may need a growth diet until closer to 15–16 months. These are approximate examples, so ask your veterinary team when to transition your individual pet.

For giant-breed puppies, AAHA also cautions against excessive calcium and recommends maintaining a lean body condition. Do not try to manage growth by making unsupervised changes to a puppy’s diet; get guidance on an appropriate food and amount.
Should you change food when your pet gets older?
Age alone does not mean a thriving older pet needs a different food. AAHA says a dog or cat doing well on a complete-and-balanced adult maintenance diet can continue it until a medical condition prompts a change. Discuss a transition with your veterinary team if health, weight, or other needs change rather than switching solely because a package says “senior.”

Can you feed a home-prepared diet?
Home-prepared food can be nutritionally incomplete if the recipe is not properly formulated. AAHA cites studies in which most evaluated recipes from books and websites—including some written by veterinarians—failed to provide complete and balanced nutrition. If you choose this route, work with a board-certified veterinary nutritionist and follow the formulated recipe precisely. A recipe found online should not be assumed to meet your pet’s needs.

Get individualized advice if your pet is underweight or overweight, is growing, has an illness, has had a substantial weight change, or needs a therapeutic diet. Your veterinary team can consider the animal’s health and body condition alongside the food and its feeding directions, and help review the plan as those needs change.
