Beelzebufo was a giant fossil frog from Late Cretaceous Madagascar. Its large mouth and similarities to living horned frogs suggest it could have ambushed and eaten vertebrates—including, possibly, very small juvenile dinosaurs. But no fossil evidence directly shows Beelzebufo eating a dinosaur, so “dinosaur-eating” describes a plausible inference, not a confirmed meal.
What was Beelzebufo?
Beelzebufo ampinga was a large, heavily built frog that lived in Madagascar during the Late Cretaceous. Its fossils come from the Maevarano Formation. The original description emphasized its unusual anatomy: a robust skull with extensive bony sculpturing, a condition known as hyperossification.

Additional fossils described in 2014 included more complete, articulated material from the skull, vertebral column and hind limb. Micro-CT scans helped researchers examine internal and external anatomy and refine the reconstruction. The newer material also revealed large flanges at the rear sides of the skull and sculptured tables on the vertebral spines.

How big was the “devil toad”?
Evans, Jones and Krause’s 2008 paper illustrated a reconstructed average-sized adult female with a skull width of 200 mm and a snout–vent length of 425 mm. Those are reconstruction-based estimates shown in a figure caption, not measurements from a complete preserved skeleton. They convey the animal’s extraordinary size without establishing a precise maximum for the species.

The Western Australian Museum gives the age of the fossil-bearing rocks as 72–66 million years. That range places Beelzebufo in the Late Cretaceous; the numerical range is the museum’s stated estimate for the rocks, not a direct date for an individual frog. Did Beelzebufo really eat dinosaurs?
It may have been capable of eating very small juvenile dinosaurs, but that idea comes from anatomy and comparison—not a fossilized meal. The cited studies do not report stomach contents, an associated bite-marked dinosaur fossil or other direct evidence of Beelzebufo predation on dinosaurs.

The proposed scenario rests on the frog’s large mouth and its resemblance to modern South American horned frogs, or Ceratophrys. The Western Australian Museum describes living horned frogs as ambush predators that take a broad range of prey, and notes that small animals fitting in Beelzebufo’s mouth could have included baby dinosaurs. That supports a possibility, not proof. It does not imply the frog hunted adult or large dinosaurs. What can its fossils tell us about how it lived?
The 2014 study’s anatomical findings support interpretations of a robust animal with a large head and potential adaptations for a dry, seasonal environment. Its authors suggested that the apparent absence of a tympanic membrane, pronounced cranial exostosis and vertebral form might be consistent with burrowing under seasonally arid conditions.

That is an ecological interpretation, not behavior preserved in the fossils. The bones do not directly show Beelzebufo digging or establish how often it burrowed. The ambush-predator idea is also an inference from anatomy and comparison with living frogs, rather than a directly observed hunting strategy.

The relationship is intriguing, but its exact placement has been debated. The 2008 description assigned Beelzebufo to Ceratophryinae, a group then considered endemic to South America, and discussed possible Late Cretaceous biological connections among Madagascar, India and South America. A 2011 study argued that phylogenetic analyses and molecular divergence-time estimates did not support treating Beelzebufo as a crown-group member of Ceratophryinae. (Ruane, Pyron and Burbrink, Journal of Evolutionary Biology, 2011) The 2014 analysis instead placed it among hyloid frogs and near South American Ceratophryidae. That supports a meaningful evolutionary comparison with horned frogs, but does not settle its precise relationship or prove a particular migration route or land bridge. What is known—and what remains an inference?
- Direct fossil evidence: Beelzebufo was a large, robust, hyperossified frog from the Late Cretaceous Maevarano Formation of Madagascar.
- Supported interpretation: Its large mouth and comparison with living horned frogs are consistent with a vertebrate-eating ambush predator.
- Possible, not demonstrated: Very small juvenile dinosaurs may have been among its potential prey.
- Unsettled: Its exact relationship to South American horned frogs and the biogeographic explanation for that resemblance remain debated.
