The Gobi bear is not a species newly rediscovered after extinction: it is an isolated, critically endangered population of brown bears in Mongolia. A cub is encouraging evidence of reproduction, but one sighting cannot show whether the population is recovering.
What did the camera reportedly capture?
An article published January 14, 2026, by Indian Defence Review says the footage shows a female Gobi bear with a cub and attributes it to The Wild Ones. That is the report’s description, not an independently confirmed identification of the clip or its production details. A separate 2024 article record documents Gobi bears in camera-trap records from Great Gobi A, confirming that camera trapping is used to monitor wildlife there; it does not verify this particular mother-and-cub video or the report’s claim that more than 350 cameras were deployed. Was the Gobi bear once believed extinct?
The available peer-reviewed studies describe a rare, isolated bear population facing serious conservation risks; they do not establish that it was once believed extinct. The Gobi bear is a population of brown bears living in Mongolia’s Great Gobi Strictly Protected Area “A,” not a separate bear species newly found after disappearing. The “once believed extinct” wording should therefore be treated as headline framing, not a documented conservation history or formal status.
How many Gobi bears are there?
The best population figures in the cited studies are historical estimates based on genetic sampling, not a current count. Researchers estimated 22 bears in 2009 and 31 in 2017, and the later study found no significant change across estimates for 2009, 2013, and 2017.

These figures do not tell us how many Gobi bears live there in 2026. The 2021 study’s survey series ends in 2017, so presenting either estimate as a current census would overstate what the data show.
Why is the population considered at such high risk?
The studies describe a small, isolated population with low genetic diversity. The 2015 researchers concluded that it likely had fewer than 40 individuals and was critically endangered. In the 2021 study, the authors wrote: “Our evidence supports the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) designation of this population as Critically Endangered.” The study’s population and habitat analysis describes Great Gobi A as covering 46,369 km², while the bears are restricted to roughly 23,600 km² near water sources.

The same study describes a harsh study-area climate: average annual precipitation of 190 mm per year, with temperatures ranging from −40°C in winter to 40°C in summer. Those are site descriptors reported by the researchers, not conditions measured uniformly across every place or year in the reserve.

No single sighting can establish a population trend. If the reported identification is accurate, a female with a cub would indicate that at least one bear reproduced, but determining recovery requires comparable monitoring over time—for example, repeated population estimates that show a meaningful and sustained increase. The available estimates showed no statistically significant change through 2017, and no current 2026 population count is established by the cited sources.
