More than 100 rabbits were removed from a Perth home over two days in November 2020 after their owners became overwhelmed by the growing population. Many were described as babies; they had been kept in stacked cages, boxes, bird cages and laundry baskets. The account is a snapshot of the rescue at that time, not an update on the rabbits’ current circumstances.
How were the rabbits found and rescued?
According to PerthNow’s report of 25 November 2020, a member of the public went to the home intending to buy a rabbit advertised for sale. The visit led to the RSPCA being alerted, and the owners agreed to surrender the rabbits. Animal advocates then spent two days removing more than 100 animals.

The report said the rabbits were being kept in stacked cages, boxes, bird cages and laundry baskets. It attributed the situation to the owners becoming overwhelmed as the population grew: they had started with four rabbits two years earlier.
Who helped, and where did the rabbits go?
SAFE Perth, Romeo’s Rabbit Rescue and Saving Thumpers assisted with relocating the rabbits. PerthNow reported that 69 were at the RSPCA Malaga Animal Care Centre when the story was published. That figure describes their location at the time; the report does not establish what happened to them later.

What care did the rabbits need?
The RSPCA described veterinary checks and ongoing care for the animals. The reported treatment could include care for possible ringworm, medication, sterilisation, microchipping and vaccination. These were care needs described during the 2020 response, not a record of the final treatment received by each rabbit.
RSPCA WA estimated that staffing and care for the 69 rabbits at the Malaga centre would cost A$30,000 for an average stay of three months, as reported by PerthNow in 2020. This was a forecast from that time, not a confirmed final cost or a current estimate.

What warning did the RSPCA give rabbit owners?
Hannah Dreaver, then RSPCA WA animal and enforcement operations manager, used the case to urge owners to sterilise their rabbits and understand that they need ongoing attention. PerthNow quoted her saying, “This is a timely warning for rabbit owners to get their pets sterilised.” She also cautioned against treating rabbits as “easy care, set and forget pets,” adding that they need care and attention.
