Moving to Arizona with an older dog calls for a conservative routine: keep a cool indoor refuge and fresh water available, schedule necessary outings for cooler hours, avoid hot pavement, and ask your veterinarian to tailor activity to your dog’s health and mobility. Senior dogs are at higher risk for heatstroke, and no temperature check, shade, or piece of gear guarantees that an outing is safe.
Prepare for your dog’s individual needs
Older dogs are among those at increased risk of heatstroke, according to Cornell University’s canine heat-safety guidance. Heart or breathing conditions and other individual factors can add risk. Before establishing a new exercise routine, ask your veterinarian what duration and level of activity are appropriate for your dog, taking into account health conditions, medications, body condition, breed, and mobility.

There is no established universal acclimation timeline for senior dogs moving to Arizona. Treat the move as a reason to observe your dog closely and adjust routines to the weather and the dog in front of you, rather than assuming a set number of days will make summer conditions safe.

Keep a cool indoor refuge available
During extreme heat, keep your dog in a reliably cool indoor space. Make clean water easy to reach, and keep any outdoor water bowl shaded. On outings, carry water and offer frequent opportunities to drink. A portable bowl or fan can be a convenience, but neither replaces avoiding dangerous heat or arranging veterinary care when needed. These precautions reflect guidance from the University of Arizona and Cornell.

Choose cooler hours and keep outings modest
Favor early morning or late evening for necessary walks. Avoid long walks, hikes, and strenuous activity in hot weather; keep necessary trips short and turn back if your dog is reluctant to continue. Dr. Karyn Wesley, an assistant professor of practice at the University of Arizona College of Veterinary Medicine, cautioned that “In places like Arizona, during summer, heatstroke can occur even with simple, routine exercise such as a slow dog walk.” A pause or reluctance may reflect tiredness, overheating, or pain, so do not push an older dog to finish a route.
Check the route, not just the air temperature
Hot pavement can burn paws, including after sunset. Maricopa County Animal Care and Control publishes these air-temperature and asphalt-temperature pairs as local guidance; they are not a statewide rule or a guarantee for any particular route:

| Air temperature | Asphalt temperature |
|---|---|
| 77°F | 125°F |
| 86°F | 135°F |
| 87°F | 143°F |
| 102°F | 167°F |
Maricopa County’s guidance suggests touching pavement with a bare foot or the back of a hand for seven seconds as a rough screen. That check cannot establish that an entire route is safe. Prefer shade or grass where possible, avoid hot surfaces, and shorten or skip pavement crossings when conditions warrant. Booties may be considered for unavoidable crossings, but they do not make hot conditions safe for exercise.
Never leave your dog in a parked car
Do not leave a dog in a parked car, even briefly. An enclosed vehicle can heat rapidly: the University of Arizona article says it may exceed 100°F within 20 minutes when the outdoor temperature is 80°F, and 120°F within 60 minutes. Treat those figures as the article’s warning, not as a safe waiting-time calculation.

Do not apply human sunscreen unless your veterinarian confirms that the product is safe for your dog. The University of Arizona warns that many products contain zinc oxide, which can be toxic to dogs and cats.
Recognize possible heatstroke and act promptly
Heavy or persistent panting, difficulty breathing, weakness or inability to stand, abnormal gum color, vomiting or diarrhea, confusion or disorientation, seizures, and collapse are urgent warning signs described in University of Arizona and Maricopa County guidance. If heatstroke is possible, do not wait to see whether your dog improves on its own.

Plan caregiver backup as part of the move
A new routine also needs a backup plan, especially if an older adult or family member is the dog’s primary caregiver. The University of Arizona Center on Aging’s caregiver handout recommends deciding who can provide care in an emergency and ensuring the dog has water and a cool place during hot weather. It also advises keeping coyotes from reaching fenced areas where pets are kept. The handout is practical caregiver guidance, not a veterinary clinical protocol.
