PerthNow reported that Surf Life Saving WA closed the Perth beach shortly before midday after a sighting notice placed a tiger shark about 5 metres offshore. The beach reopened shortly before 2 pm.
What the 2023 Mullaloo Beach report said
PerthNow reported that a video showed what appeared to be a 2.5-metre shark swimming close to shore at Mullaloo Beach, north of Perth. The report attributed the tiger shark identification and the estimate of 5 metres from shore to the sighting notice. Those figures are reported estimates; the available account does not independently verify the species or measure the shark or its distance.

The closure and reopening were reported as actions taken by Surf Life Saving WA on 9 January 2023. The footage and report describe that past event and should not be read as an active warning.
How to check for current shark warnings at Mullaloo
For current shark activity and warnings in Western Australia, check SharkSmart, the WA Government’s shark-activity information service. The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) says alerts are available through SharkSmart and its app.

A separate SharkSmart notice about a technical fault at the Mullaloo South land-based warning tower was dated 10 December 2025 and updated on 7 January 2026. It said technicians had replaced the siren. That notice concerns the warning system, not the 2023 sighting; consult SharkSmart for the latest status rather than assuming an old notice remains in effect.
What to do if you see a shark
Leave the water calmly
Surf Life Saving WA advises getting out of the water quickly and calmly, while avoiding excessive splashing or noise. Follow any directions from lifeguards or beach authorities.

Report the sighting
DPIRD says shark sightings can be reported to Water Police on 9442 8600, a line staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Reports may prompt a response such as a beach closure. Check current SharkSmart alerts for any further instructions.
