When Does Fall Hummingbird Migration Start? See the Latest Sightings Maps

Fall hummingbird migration can begin in mid-July, with more noticeable movement in August and September. The latest fall maps checked still show 2025 reports, so use them to follow sightings—not to predict an exact arrival date.

Fall hummingbird migration typically begins in late summer, with some birds moving south as early as mid-July. The latest fall sightings maps checked on August 8, 2026, still show 2025 data, so they can help you follow reported activity but cannot predict when a hummingbird will reach your yard.

Here is what the maps show, how to read them, and what to do with your feeder while birds are moving south.

When does fall hummingbird migration begin?

Some hummingbirds start moving south in July. Adult males generally leave first, followed by females and then young birds. For many observers, the most noticeable movement occurs in August and September.

Timing varies considerably:

Birds and region Typical fall pattern
Ruby-throated Hummingbirds Migration is especially noticeable across the eastern and southern United States during August and September.
Rufous and other western hummingbirds Some begin southbound movement in July, with activity continuing through late summer and fall.
Anna’s Hummingbirds Many remain year-round along the Pacific Coast rather than making a long seasonal migration.
Gulf Coast and other warm regions Some hummingbirds may remain through winter, while others pass through on migration.

Migration is not a single synchronized wave. A quiet feeder does not prove that every hummingbird has left, and a late sighting does not necessarily mean the bird is staying for winter.

Which interactive map should you use?

Two commonly cited resources serve different purposes. As of August 8, 2026, Hummingbird Central listed a 2026 spring map and a 2026 overwintering map, but its available fall map was for 2025. The comparable Hummingbird Guide fall page was also labeled 2025.

Hummingbird Central: reported sightings

Hummingbird Central’s fall migration map displays submitted sightings. You can zoom and pan around the map, click individual icons for sighting details, and use the separate map icon to open a list of reports.

The map includes species categories such as Ruby-throated, Rufous, Black-chinned, Anna’s, Allen’s, Costa’s, Calliope, Broad-billed, Broad-tailed, Buff-bellied, Rivoli’s, and Other/Unknown. It is the better choice when you want to see where birds have recently been reported.

Hummingbird Guide: last feeder sightings

Hummingbird Guide’s fall map tracks a different data point: the last date a person saw a hummingbird at a feeder for the season.

Its instructions ask observers to watch daily, wait until they have seen no hummingbirds for two days, and then submit the final sighting date. It requests one report rather than repeated random sightings, and updates submissions periodically rather than immediately.

That makes this resource more useful for studying departure patterns than for checking when birds will arrive in your neighborhood.

How to read the sightings map without overinterpreting it

  1. Open the fall map. Start with Hummingbird Central’s fall migration page, while remembering that the latest available fall page checked here is labeled 2025 rather than 2026.
  2. Find your state or region. Zoom in gradually instead of assuming that a single nearby marker represents your exact town.
  3. Click several icons. Compare the dates, species, and locations of multiple reports. One old sighting is not evidence that birds are currently passing through.
  4. Check the report list. The list view can make dates easier to compare than overlapping map markers.
  5. Compare patterns, not promises. A cluster of recent reports may show that migration is progressing through an area, but it cannot provide a guaranteed arrival date for your address.

Use a desktop computer or tablet for the clearest view. If you are using a phone, turn it sideways into landscape mode.

Why the map may not match what you see

These maps are based on public reports, not a complete scientific census. Reports may be posted several days after the sighting. Some are placed near a city center instead of at the observer’s exact address, and not every submitted report is necessarily added. Map managers may prioritize reports that help show the leading edge of migration or omit some entries when staffing and map volume limit processing.

BOLITE Hummingbird Feeders for Outdoors Hanging, Hand Blown, Blue, 22oz
  • Unique Gifts: Great choice as gift for your parents, friends, neighbors and loved ones. Bird watching gifts for people who love birds and gardening. Gifts for Anniversary, Birthday, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas
  • Bee & Ant Resistant Design: Comes with an ant moat to help keep ants away, while the 5 feeding ports feature bee-resistant design. 360° perch lets multiple hummingbirds feed comfortably. Plastic base stays cooler than metal for added safety
  • Attractive Design: Each hummingbird feeder is handmade with thick, durable glass that's sure to attract hummingbirds with its bright blue colors. Small bubbles on the glass surface are normal and add to the unique charm of each feeder
  • Generous Nectar Capacity: Holds a full 22 oz of nectar, meaning fewer refills and fresher nectar longer between changes. Tinted glass makes it easy to peek at the level and know precisely when it's time for a top-up
  • Easy to Fill and Clean: Simply unscrew the bottle from the base for filling and cleaning. To assemble, align the grooves in the metal lid and plastic base securely, fill with nectar, then screw the bottle onto the base to ensure a tight seal. Flip upright swiftly to prevent leaks. For more full details, please find the user manual

For that reason, a missing marker does not mean there are no hummingbirds in an area. It may simply mean no one has reported one, the report has not been processed, or the sighting was not included.

Should you take down your hummingbird feeder?

No. Leaving a feeder available does not stop hummingbirds from migrating. Changing day length is a major migration cue, and birds migrate whether or not a feeder remains in the yard.

Keeping nectar available can help late migrants and birds passing through refuel. Cornell Lab of Ornithology recommends leaving feeders out for several weeks after the last hummingbird seems to have disappeared. Audubon gives similar advice because migrating birds may stop at feeders along their route.

A sudden decline in visits is not proof that migration is complete. Natural flowers, insects, weather, nesting activity, and ordinary population variation can all change feeder traffic.

How to maintain the feeder during migration

  1. Keep offering fresh nectar. Do not leave sugar water out for more than three days. Replace it sooner during hot weather.
  2. Clean the feeder regularly. Empty it, wash it, and refill it before adding fresh solution.
  3. Skip red food coloring. It is unnecessary when using a standard hummingbird feeder.
  4. Watch for late visitors. Continue checking the feeder for several weeks after activity drops.
  5. Record your observations. Note the date, approximate location, and species if you can identify it confidently. This gives you a better local record than relying on a broad regional marker.

Do not assume a hummingbird is abnormal simply because it appears late in the season. Some species migrate at different times, some individuals travel later, and some birds overwinter in warm parts of the United States.

What to expect from a future 2026 fall map

A 2026 fall map may become available as the season develops, but it should still be treated as a live collection of sightings rather than a forecast. The most useful question will be, “Where and when have people recently reported hummingbirds?”—not, “What exact date will one arrive at my feeder?”

Until a current 2026 fall page is published, the 2025 map can help explain how the interface works and provide historical context. For decisions about your own feeder, combine the map with direct observations, local weather, flowering plants, and reports from nearby birders.

FAQ

Has the 2026 fall hummingbird migration map been published?

As of August 8, 2026, Hummingbird Central’s directory listed a 2026 spring map and a 2026 overwintering map, but no 2026 fall map. Its available fall page, like the comparable Hummingbird Guide page, was labeled 2025.

Can an interactive map tell me exactly when hummingbirds will arrive?

No. The maps show submitted sightings or last feeder sightings. Reports may be delayed, generalized to a nearby city, or omitted, so they can reveal regional patterns but cannot guarantee an arrival date for a particular yard.

Should I remove my feeder when hummingbirds begin migrating?

No. Feeders do not prevent migration. Keep offering fresh nectar, and leave the feeder available for several weeks after the last apparent sighting in case late migrants or passing birds need fuel.

How often should I change hummingbird nectar?

Replace sugar water at least every three days, and change it more often in hot weather. Clean the feeder before refilling it, and do not add red food coloring.

The Bottom Line

Fall hummingbird movement can start in mid-July, with August and September bringing more noticeable activity in many regions. The available interactive maps are useful for checking reported sightings and departure patterns, but they are not precise arrival forecasts—and the principal fall pages checked as of August 8, 2026, still contained 2025 data. Keep your feeder clean and supplied with fresh nectar for several weeks after visits decline.
