An Australian traveler’s painful, blistering skin reaction in Bali was reportedly blamed by a local doctor on contact with a tomcat beetle, also called a rove beetle. The insect was not independently identified, and the account describes suspected contact—not a confirmed bite.

What happened to Natalie Carroll in Bali?

PerthNow reported on 14 November 2024 that Australian traveler and TikTok creator Natalie Carroll noticed red marks on her thigh while on holiday in Bali. By the following morning, the marks had become painful blisters. Carroll described the worsening reaction in a TikTok video: “24 hours of that red mark and then this is what I then had on my leg… these, I can’t even describe the pain.”

According to the report, a local doctor said a tomcat beetle was the likely cause. The coverage does not document a captured insect, laboratory identification, or independent confirmation of the species, so the attribution should be treated as a reported suspicion. PerthNow’s report recounts Carroll’s experience and care.

Was Carroll bitten by a tomcat beetle?

The reported explanation is contact with the beetle, not a venom-injecting bite. Indonesia Expat quotes veterinary parasitologist Dr Swaid Abdullah saying that “tomcats cannot inject their venom through bites or stings, but instead cause wounds through skin contact.” This is a statement in secondary reporting, not an independently reviewed clinical guideline. Indonesia Expat’s account describes the suspected contact dermatitis.

What treatment did Carroll receive?

PerthNow reported that Carroll received ointment and an oral antibiotic. Those were prescribed for her individual case; the reports do not establish a standard treatment regimen for suspected tomcat dermatitis or provide an official Bali-specific first-aid protocol.

How can travelers reduce the chance of contact?

Carroll advised travelers staying in open-air accommodation to use insect repellent and coils at entrances. This is her reported travel advice, not evidence that coils prevent tomcat contact or the resulting skin reaction. The available account does not establish a beetle-specific prevention method.
