In a Perth Zoo video reported by PerthNow on 15 August 2025, a numbat mother walks on all fours, then rises onto her hind legs to reveal two tiny joeys clinging to her underside. They are not tucked into a pouch: numbats have no pouch, and their young cling to their mother’s teats.
What the video shows
The footage captures the mother moving along on all fours before standing upright, making the joeys on her belly visible. PerthNow reported that viewers joked about their resemblance to “num nuts,” while one commenter wondered whether the young were “drinking milk” or “hanging on for dear life.” The striking sight is the joeys’ exposed grip beneath their mother.

Why the joeys cling to their mother
Numbats do not have a pouch
Unlike many marsupials, a numbat mother has no pouch in which to carry her young. Perth Zoo’s explanation, reproduced by PerthNow, is that “Their tiny joeys cling to their belly as she scurries around.” The joeys attach to their mother’s teats as they nurse.

According to PerthNow, the joeys remain clinging to the teats until they are large enough to be placed in a hollow log or burrow while their mother forages. The video therefore shows a stage of their care before they are left in a sheltered spot during her search for food.

Why Perth Zoo’s numbat breeding work matters
In a caption quoted by PerthNow in its 2025 report, Perth Zoo said it had released 321 numbats through its breed-for-release program since 1993, and that fewer than 1,500 remained in the wild. Those are figures stated by the zoo in the caption at that time, not independently verified current totals.
PerthNow described numbats as endangered and named habitat loss and predation among their threats. It reported that the species once ranged across Australia but now survives in isolated pockets of south-west Western Australia, with natural populations at Dryandra Woodlands near Narrogin and Perup Nature Reserve near Manjimup. The report also says numbats eat termites exclusively, consuming up to 20,000 a day, and obtain water from their food rather than drinking. These range, threat and diet details are attributed to PerthNow.
