Have the essentials in place before you bring your kitten home. The first day is easier when food, water, litter, a safe carrier, and a quiet resting area are already set up.

This checklist covers the 13 supplies a new kitten is most likely to need, plus the safety checks and optional purchases that can wait. Product choices should match the kitten’s age, coat, health, and the food and litter used by the shelter or breeder.

New kitten checklist: the 13 essentials

Use this list as a shopping guide, but ask the shelter, breeder, or foster carer what the kitten is already eating and which litter it uses. Keeping those familiar products at first can prevent unnecessary food changes and litter-box refusals.

1. Complete kitten food

Choose a food with a nutritional-adequacy statement saying it is complete and balanced for growth, kitten life stages, or all life stages. Kittens need food formulated for development rather than an adult-maintenance diet.

Do not rely on the phrase “AAFCO-approved kitten food.” The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) does not approve individual pet foods. Instead, read the actual adequacy statement on the label.

Buy the food the kitten has been eating if possible. If you want to change it, transition gradually rather than replacing the old food in one meal.

2. Separate food and water bowls

Get one bowl for food and another for water. Washable ceramic or stainless-steel bowls are practical because they are easy to clean and less likely to retain food residue than poorly maintained plastic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a stable design that is difficult to tip over. Keep both bowls away from the litter boxes, provide fresh water continuously, and wash and refill the water bowl every day. Some kittens prefer a wide, shallow bowl that does not press against their whiskers.

3. Two litter boxes

For one kitten, start with two litter boxes. The commonly recommended rule is one box per cat, plus one extra.

Use low-sided boxes that a small kitten can enter without climbing. Uncovered boxes are often a sensible starting point because they provide ventilation and a wider view. Place them in quiet, accessible locations—not beside food and not behind a closed door the kitten cannot reach at all times.

Most automatic or robotic litter boxes are not suitable for very young kittens, particularly around 6–8 weeks old. Use ordinary boxes until the kitten is old enough and the manufacturer’s safety requirements are met.

4. Kitten-appropriate litter

Start with the litter the kitten already knows. Many cats accept unscented, fine-textured litter, but preferences vary. Some kittens accept clumping litter; others may prefer a different texture.

Kitten Starter Kit - 16 Pcs Cat Essentials Set Includes Litter Box
  • 16-in-1 Cat Starter Kit: Includes 1 litter box, 1 litter scoop, 1 automatic dual pet bowl (for food and water), 1 cat scratching pad, 1 interactive scratching toy, 1 cat comb, 1 nursing bottle, 1 nail file, 1 grooming glove, 1 teaser wand, 1 cat collar, and 5 assorted cat toys. Everything you need to welcome a new kitten or cat!
  • Exceptional Value Complete Set: This all-in-one kitten starter kit covers all your feline needs—from kittenhood to adulthood. Avoid the hassle of shopping for each item individually. Save both time and money while providing your pet with high-quality essentials. Perfect for both personal use and gifting!
  • Practical Litter Box & Feeder: The spacious litter box measures 15.7” x 13.1” x 4.72”, featuring high sides to contain litter while allowing easy access. The combined automatic water dispenser and food bowl minimizes refills and helps keep fresh water available at all times. The included bottle is also ideal for feeding kittens.
  • Scratching Board & Engaging Toys: The non-toxic corrugated cardboard scratching board helps maintain healthy claws and protects your furniture. Add the interactive scratching toy to combat boredom and encourage activity. Various teaser and play toys stimulate natural instincts and support physical health.
  • Durable & Pet-Safe Materials: Made with high-quality PP and TPR, the litter box and scoop are sturdy, easy to clean, and built for daily use. Collars and toys are crafted from pet-friendly plastics and soft cotton fabrics. Rest easy—your cat’s comfort and safety come first.

Avoid buying a large supply of scented litter, crystals, pellets, or a covered-box system before you know what your kitten will use. If you need to change litter, mix the new type in gradually rather than making an abrupt switch.

5. Litter scoop

A scoop makes daily cleaning much easier. Remove feces and urine clumps every day when using clumping litter, and keep the box visibly clean. Some cats refuse a box that already contains waste.

Replace a box if it cracks or permanently holds an unpleasant odor. Scrubbing the box with a cat-safe product during full changes is preferable to trying to cover odors with strongly scented products.

6. A secure cat carrier

Your kitten needs a carrier for the journey home, veterinary visits, and any later travel. Never let a kitten roam loose in a moving vehicle, even for a short trip.

Put a soft towel or blanket inside, but avoid fabric with holes, loose strings, or frayed edges. At home, leave the carrier open in the kitten’s room with the door secured so it cannot swing shut. A carrier that is available as a familiar resting place is less frightening than one that appears only before a stressful trip.

7. A bed, blanket, or safe hideaway

Provide a warm, quiet place to sleep and retreat. You do not need an expensive bed: a sturdy cardboard box, open carrier, or washable blanket can work well.

Check blankets for holes, loops, and loose strings that could catch a paw or become a chewing hazard. Avoid heated beds with exposed or accessible cords and any product that could overheat or burn a small kitten.

8. A scratching post or pad

Scratching is normal cat behavior, so provide an approved surface before the kitten chooses the sofa. If space and budget allow, offer both:

  • A vertical post: stable and tall enough for a full stretch.
  • A horizontal pad: often attractive to kittens that prefer cardboard or floor-level scratching.

Some cats strongly prefer one orientation or material. Stability matters: a post that wobbles can discourage use and may frighten the kitten.

9. Safe interactive toys

Choose lightweight toys without parts small enough to swallow. Balls, sturdy soft toys, and other kitten-safe toys can provide play and exercise.

Wand toys, string, yarn, ribbon, and similar items require supervision. Put them away after play because swallowed string-like material can cause a serious intestinal obstruction. Inspect toys regularly and discard anything torn, cracked, or missing pieces.

10. A brush or comb

The right grooming tool depends on the kitten’s coat. A long-haired kitten will usually need more regular grooming, but short-haired kittens also benefit from gentle handling and occasional brushing.

Keep early sessions brief and calm. Introducing the brush while the kitten is relaxed makes future grooming easier and gives you a chance to notice changes in the skin or coat.

11. Kitten nail trimmers

Small cat nail trimmers are useful for maintaining sharp tips as your kitten grows. Begin with short, positive sessions that involve touching the paws before attempting a trim.

Trim only the sharp tip and avoid the quick, the pink area containing blood vessels and nerves. If you have never trimmed a cat’s nails, ask a veterinary professional to demonstrate. Do not use human nail clippers if they crush or split the nail.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

12. Breakaway collar and identification

If you use a collar, choose a breakaway or safety collar designed for cats. Check the fit frequently because kittens grow quickly, and check it again after every growth spurt.

An ID tag with current contact details adds a useful layer of protection. Ask your veterinarian or adoption organization about microchipping as well; a microchip can identify an indoor cat that slips outside even if its collar is lost.

A collar is not a substitute for a carrier. Transport the kitten in a properly secured carrier, not by holding it or attaching a leash to its collar.

13. Enzymatic pet-accident cleaner

Keep an enzymatic cleaner ready before arrival. Even a kitten that uses the litter box reliably may have an accident while adjusting to a new room.

Clean accidents promptly and use a product that neutralizes the odor rather than merely masking it. Lingering urine odor can encourage a kitten to return to the same spot. Avoid ammonia- or vinegar-based cleaners on cat-soiled areas: their odors may resemble urine or be irritating.

What to set up before the kitten arrives

Prepare a quiet starter room rather than opening the entire home immediately. Put the following in the room before you bring the kitten in:

  • Food and water bowls
  • At least one litter box, with the second box placed elsewhere if the room is too small
  • Bed, blanket, or hiding box
  • Carrier
  • Scratching surface
  • A small selection of safe toys

Keep food and water well away from the litter area. Let the kitten settle in this smaller space first, then gradually allow access to more of the home once it is eating, resting, playing, and using the box normally.

Kitten-proof the room and the rest of the home

Before the kitten explores, check for hazards that are easy to overlook:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Secure electrical cords and dangling curtain cords.
  • Use screens or locks on openable windows.
  • Remove poisonous plants, medications, pesticides, cleaning products, candles, and accessible rubbish.
  • Block narrow gaps behind appliances and furniture where a kitten could become trapped.
  • Keep string, ribbon, hair ties, small toys, and other swallowable objects out of reach.

Look at the room from floor level. A kitten can reach, squeeze into, or chew things that an adult cat may ignore.

Useful supplies that can wait

These items can be helpful, but they are not required for the first day:

Supply When it is useful Important caution
Treats Training, handling, and positive associations Keep treats small and limit them to about 5–10% of the diet, as advised by the ASPCA.
Cat tree or perch Climbing, resting, and vertical space Choose a short, stable model for a young, unsteady kitten.
Toothbrush and cat toothpaste Preventive dental care Use toothpaste made for cats—never human toothpaste.
Cat shampoo Occasional cleaning when genuinely needed Use cat-specific shampoo; most cats do not need routine baths.
Harness and leash Optional outdoor enrichment for cats that tolerate them Not necessary for normal indoor life, and introduce gradually.
Supplements or medicines Only when a veterinarian recommends them Do not add supplements routinely to a complete kitten diet or give medication without veterinary guidance.

Book the first veterinary visit

Arrange an examination soon after adoption. Bring any records you received and ask the veterinarian to review previous vaccines, parasite control, nutrition, and the next vaccination appointments.

The usual FVRCP vaccination series begins at around 6–8 weeks and is repeated at 3–4-week intervals until approximately 16–20 weeks, according to Cornell Feline Health Center. The correct schedule depends on the kitten’s history, age, health, and veterinary assessment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Persistent accidents, diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, painful elimination, or sudden litter-box avoidance should not automatically be treated as a training problem. These signs can have a medical cause and warrant veterinary advice.

FAQ

What should I buy before bringing a kitten home?

At minimum, buy complete kitten food, separate food and water bowls, two accessible litter boxes, familiar kitten-appropriate litter, a scoop, a secure carrier, a safe bed or hideaway, a scratching surface, safe toys, grooming and nail-care tools, optional breakaway identification, and enzymatic cleaner.

How many litter boxes does one kitten need?

Start with two boxes. The usual guideline is one litter box per cat plus one extra. Use low-sided, easy-to-enter boxes and place them away from food and water.

Should I buy the same food and litter the kitten already uses?

Yes, if possible. Familiar food and litter can make the transition easier. Change either product gradually rather than switching abruptly, especially during the first few days.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What supplies are unsafe for kittens?

Avoid accessible strings, yarn, ribbon, loose toy parts, frayed blankets, exposed cords, human toothpaste, human shampoo, unsupervised medications, and unsafe heated beds. Wand toys and other string-like toys should be stored after supervised play.

The Bottom Line

Prepare a quiet starter room with complete kitten food, separate bowls, two low-entry litter boxes, familiar litter, a carrier, a safe hiding place, scratching and play options, basic grooming tools, and enzymatic cleaner. Start with familiar products, kitten-proof the home, and arrange a veterinary check soon after arrival.
