Your pet’s ideal routine depends on species, age, breed, health, lifestyle, geography, and household. Use the resolutions below as a planning framework—not as a universal vaccine schedule, diet plan, exercise prescription, or substitute for veterinary care.

The essential five resolutions

1. Book a preventive-care appointment

Make a wellness visit your first resolution, then follow the schedule your veterinarian recommends. At least annual examinations are appropriate for many healthy adult cats, and many dogs also benefit from regular preventive visits; puppies, kittens, senior pets, and animals with chronic conditions may need more frequent care.

A wellness appointment is more than a vaccine appointment. Ask your veterinary team to review:

  • vaccines and exposure-related risks;
  • flea, tick, heartworm, and intestinal-parasite prevention;
  • teeth, gums, and possible dental disease;
  • weight, body condition, portions, treats, and diet;
  • identification and microchip registration;
  • behavior, anxiety, sleep, mobility, and exercise;
  • nutrition, supplements, and medication safety; and
  • new risks related to travel, boarding, daycare, moving, or changes at home.

Write down changes you have noticed before the appointment. Appetite, thirst, urination, stool, vomiting, grooming, breathing, mobility, sleep, and behavior can be easy to overlook when they change gradually. A short list gives your veterinarian more useful information than trying to remember everything in the examination room.

2. Create a personalized vaccine and parasite-prevention plan

Do not assume that every pet needs the same vaccines every year. The right plan depends on age, previous vaccination history, medical status, lifestyle, travel, local disease risks, outdoor access, contact with other animals, and household members who may be vulnerable to infection.

Ask your veterinarian which protections are appropriate for your animal and location. For dogs, preventive planning commonly includes ongoing consideration of fleas, ticks, heartworms, and intestinal parasites. Indoor-only cats can still encounter parasite risks through insects, other animals, open windows or doors, contaminated materials, and people who carry particles indoors. “Indoor” does not automatically mean “risk-free.”

Keep a written record of product names, doses, dates, and the next due date. Never combine or substitute parasite products without veterinary guidance. Products that are safe for one species, age, weight, or health status may be dangerous for another. This is especially important in homes with cats and dogs, where some dog products can seriously harm cats.

3. Turn dental care into a gradual habit

Dental care works best as a routine rather than a once-a-year resolution. Start by making mouth handling unremarkable:

  1. Touch your pet’s cheek and lips briefly, then reward calm behavior.
  2. Progress to gently lifting the lip and examining the teeth.
  3. Introduce a pet toothbrush or other veterinarian-approved home-care method for a few seconds.
  4. Increase duration slowly and stop before your pet becomes frightened or frustrated.

Use toothpaste made for pets, not human toothpaste. Some human products contain ingredients that are unsafe for animals, and pets should not be expected to spit and rinse as people do. A home routine can help reduce plaque, but brushing does not guarantee that all dental disease will be prevented. Pain, bleeding, broken teeth, bad breath, swelling, difficulty eating, or visible tartar deserves a veterinary examination rather than an attempt to manage the problem at home.

PEGGY11 Nonslip Stainless Steel Dog Cat Bowls, 2 US Cup Each, 2 Pack
  • Stainless Steel Pet Bowl: Made for daily food or water use with a simple, practical design
  • Silicone Nonslip Bottom: Helps reduce sliding and noise on smooth feeding surfaces
  • Wide, Stable Shape: Designed to sit steadily during everyday meals
  • Easy to Clean: Smooth stainless steel surface rinses clean and is dishwasher safe
  • Stackable Design: Bowls can be stacked for compact storage when not in use

Your veterinarian can explain whether professional dental cleaning or additional treatment is clinically indicated. Do not delay care while waiting for a new toothbrush kit to solve a painful or advanced problem.

4. Measure meals, treats, and progress

Make this the year you stop estimating portions. Use the feeding guidance on the food label as a starting point, then adjust with your veterinarian based on body condition, activity, age, health, and the calorie density of the food.

Practical steps include:

  • Measure each meal with a consistent measuring cup or, when recommended, a kitchen scale.
  • Count treats, chews, table scraps, toppers, and food used during training.
  • Keep a simple weekly record if multiple people feed the pet.
  • Check body condition regularly rather than relying only on the number on the scale.
  • Ask your veterinarian how often weight should be checked and what rate of loss, if any, is safe.

Preventing excess weight is generally easier than treating obesity. Exercise is valuable for fitness, behavior, and welfare, but walks alone are not a reliable weight-loss plan; calorie intake usually needs the closest attention. Never put an overweight pet on a rapid or restrictive diet without veterinary guidance, particularly if the animal is a cat or has another health condition.

A food-dispensing toy or puzzle feeder can make measured food last longer and add foraging activity. Choose one that matches your pet’s size, eating style, ability, and medical needs. Introduce it gradually, supervise initial use, and deduct the food inside it from the day’s total rather than treating it as extra calories.

5. Add daily, species-appropriate enrichment

Enrichment is not a luxury or a synonym for exhausting your pet. It gives an animal appropriate ways to move, investigate, scratch, chew, play, rest, and interact with people.

For dogs

  • Take a sniff-focused walk instead of making every walk a speed workout.
  • Practice short reward-based training sessions.
  • Rotate safe toys and use food puzzles with measured portions.
  • Play games suited to the dog’s age, body, confidence, and physical limitations.
  • Provide quiet rest as well as activity.

For cats

  • Offer interactive play that allows stalking, chasing, and catching in a safe way.
  • Provide stable scratching posts and surfaces with different orientations when possible.
  • Add elevated or protected resting places where the cat can retreat.
  • Rotate toys instead of leaving every toy out all the time.
  • Review litter-box location, cleanliness, number, and accessibility.

Enrichment may support welfare and reduce boredom, but it is not a cure for separation anxiety, compulsive behavior, pain, or illness. A sudden behavior change, aggression, house-soiling, hiding, vocalization, or loss of interest in normal activities warrants veterinary assessment.

Safety resolutions for the new year

6. Make food handling and bowl hygiene routine

Pet food is part of household food safety. Wash your hands before and after handling pet food, treats, and bowls. Clean bowls and measuring utensils regularly, and do not use the pet’s bowl as a scoop for the food bag.

For dry food, FDA guidance recommends keeping it in its original bag, ideally inside a clean, dry, covered container, and storing it in a cool, dry place. Keeping the original packaging preserves the lot number and other information if a recall or product question arises. Wash the storage container between bags rather than continually topping up old food.

Refrigerate unused wet food promptly according to the label and discard food that has been left out or stored too long. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for storage and serving.

Raw pet food deserves careful, non-alarmist handling. FDA and CDC guidance note that raw products are more likely than processed pet food to contain harmful germs such as Salmonella or Listeria. That does not mean every raw product is contaminated, but it does mean the handling risk is higher. Discuss any raw or homemade diet with your veterinarian or a qualified veterinary nutrition professional, especially if children, older adults, pregnant people, or immunocompromised people live in the household.

An optional pet food storage container and measuring scoop can make safe storage and consistent portions easier. It is an organizational aid, not a guarantee against contamination; cleanliness, storage time, and handling still matter.

7. Perform a home hazard audit

Spend 15 minutes walking through every room at your pet’s eye level. Secure or remove:

  • human and veterinary medications;
  • cleaning products, chemicals, and pesticides;
  • toxic plants and plant material;
  • foods that are unsafe for animals;
  • small objects, batteries, strings, cords, and children’s toys;
  • trash, compost, and foods left on counters; and
  • open windows, balconies, fences, gates, and other escape routes.

Keep pets away from fumes and recently treated areas until the product label says it is safe. Check toys, collars, leashes, crates, carriers, and scratching posts for loose parts, frayed material, sharp edges, or damaged fasteners. Replace an item when repair is unlikely to make it safe.

If you suspect poisoning, contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service immediately. In the United States, ASPCA Poison Control’s 24-hour animal-poison emergency line is (888) 426-4435. Have the product label, estimated amount, time of exposure, and your pet’s weight available if possible. Do not induce vomiting or give human medication unless a veterinary professional specifically tells you to do so. Poison control is emergency guidance, not a replacement for veterinary treatment.

8. Update identification and prepare for evacuation

A microchip is useful only when its registration details are current. Verify your phone number, email address, physical address, and emergency contact with the registry. Replace worn or unreadable ID tags, and make sure the tag information is still accurate.

Save a recent photograph of your pet from several angles. Include distinguishing markings, the pet’s name, your contact information, medication details, and any special handling needs in your records. Ready.gov recommends including pets in family emergency planning, updating microchip information, carrying current photos, and identifying evacuation destinations in advance.

A portable emergency kit may include:

  • several days of food and water;
  • medications and a written medication schedule;
  • medical and vaccination records;
  • a leash, harness, collar, carrier, or other secure restraint;
  • bowls, a can opener if needed, and a measuring utensil;
  • litter and a disposable tray for cats, or waste bags for dogs;
  • basic cleaning supplies and familiar comfort items; and
  • your veterinarian’s contact details and a list of pet-friendly evacuation destinations.

A pet emergency kit can be a convenient starting point, but no packaged kit is complete for every species, climate, medication, or disaster. Check its contents against your pet’s actual needs and replace expired food, water, medications, and batteries.

Keep a personalized pet ID tag as a supplement to—not a replacement for—microchip registration. If you evacuate, take your pet with you; do not assume an animal will be safe left at home during a fire, flood, extreme weather event, or other emergency.

9. Practice positive training and weekly observation

Choose short, reward-based training sessions over punishment. Practice useful behaviors such as coming when called, entering a carrier, accepting gentle handling, wearing a harness, waiting at doors, or remaining calm around routine care. Keep sessions brief enough that your pet can succeed.

Once a week, ask, “What has changed?” Look at appetite, drinking, urination, stool, vomiting, mobility, grooming, sleep, breathing, play, and social behavior. This is observation—not amateur diagnosis. Record a video or photograph when a symptom is intermittent, and share it with your veterinary team.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Contact a veterinarian promptly for persistent vomiting or diarrhea, breathing difficulty, pain, marked lethargy, inability to urinate, sudden weakness, poisoning, or a significant behavior change. Emergency symptoms should not wait for an online answer or the next routine appointment.

How to make resolutions stick

Choose one or two high-priority changes first. A complete lifestyle overhaul usually fails because it requires too many decisions at once. Attach each new habit to something already on your calendar:

  • After morning coffee: measure the day’s food and set aside the treat allowance.
  • After dinner: do five minutes of play or reward-based training.
  • On the first weekend of the month: check weight, food expiry dates, medications, ID details, and emergency supplies.
  • Before travel or boarding: confirm vaccines, parasite prevention, records, carrier or restraint, and emergency contacts.

A practical monthly pet-care checklist

  • Review upcoming veterinary, medication, grooming, and parasite-prevention reminders.
  • Check food portions, treat use, body condition, and weight as advised by your veterinarian.
  • Inspect teeth, coat, nails, paws, ears, litter areas, and mobility without forcing handling.
  • Wash food and water bowls and clean storage containers as appropriate.
  • Inspect toys, leashes, collars, harnesses, carriers, crates, and scratching equipment.
  • Verify microchip registration and ID-tag information.
  • Rotate enrichment activities and remove unsafe or damaged items.
  • Review household hazards, including new plants, medicines, cleaners, and renovations.
  • Rotate emergency-kit supplies and confirm evacuation destinations still accept pets.

What belongs in a resolution starter kit?

You do not need to buy a large collection of products to care for a pet well. If a physical item would remove friction from a habit you have already chosen, consider examples such as a clean measuring cup, washable bowls, a food puzzle, a scratching post, grooming supplies, a pet toothbrush, a carrier, a secure leash, waste bags, an ID tag, or emergency supplies.

Buy for the individual animal: size, chewing strength, eating behavior, mobility, species, and medical needs all matter. No toy, bowl, toothpaste, supplement, flea product, or diet is automatically right for every pet. Products can support a care plan, but they do not replace veterinary advice or treatment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

The best pet resolution is one you can repeat. Schedule appropriate preventive care, personalize vaccines and parasite prevention with your veterinarian, measure food, build dental and enrichment habits gradually, improve food and household safety, and keep identification and emergency information current. Small systems protect health more reliably than a January burst of enthusiasm.

U.S. safety note: Veterinary schedules, parasite risks, emergency contacts, product availability, and evacuation resources vary by location. Confirm local details with your veterinarian and local authorities. In any suspected poisoning or medical emergency, contact a veterinary professional immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every pet need the same vaccines every year?

Not necessarily. Vaccine schedules depend on the pet’s age, health, prior vaccination history, lifestyle, travel, geography, and exposure risks. Ask your veterinarian which vaccines and intervals are appropriate. Many healthy adult cats should be examined at least annually, while some pets need more frequent care.

Do indoor cats need parasite prevention?

Yes, indoor-only pets can still face parasite risks through insects, other animals, contaminated materials, open doors or windows, and people who carry particles indoors. Ask your veterinarian whether flea, tick, heartworm, or intestinal-parasite prevention is appropriate for your cat.

Is raw pet food safe?

Raw pet food is not automatically contaminated, but FDA and CDC guidance identify a higher risk of harmful germs such as Salmonella and Listeria compared with processed pet food. Discuss raw or homemade diets with your veterinarian and use careful food-handling practices, especially around vulnerable household members.

What should I do if my pet may have been poisoned?

Contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service immediately. In the United States, ASPCA Poison Control’s 24-hour line is (888) 426-4435. Do not induce vomiting or give medication unless a veterinary professional specifically directs you to do so.

The Bottom Line

The strongest New Year’s resolution for a pet owner is a repeatable care system: preventive veterinary visits, personalized prevention, measured feeding, daily enrichment, dental care, safer food handling, updated identification, and a practiced emergency plan.
