Western Australia reduced the Red Zone for the Queensland fruit fly (Qfly) outbreak affecting Willagee and Palmyra from Friday, 4 April 2025. The smaller boundary reflected DPIRD’s assessment that the outbreak had been contained to a smaller area; it was not an all-clear. The 2025 notice was later revoked after the outbreak was declared eradicated, but a separate Qfly response was reported in Como and South Perth in 2026. For any current rules, use DPIRD’s live directions rather than a 2025 map.
What changed on 4 April 2025?
On 31 March 2025, Western Australia’s Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) announced that the outbreak had been contained to a smaller area and that the Red Zone would be reduced from 4 April. The revised zone covered Willagee, Palmyra, Melville, O’Connor, Kardinya and Samson, plus parts of Coolbellup, Murdoch, North Lake and Winthrop. DPIRD extended the Quarantine Area Notice for six months and advised residents to check the official Qfly page to confirm whether their property remained inside the Red Zone. “Reduced” referred to the geographic boundary and focus of the response, not the end of quarantine directions. For properties still in the Red Zone, residents were required to strip host fruit and fruiting vegetables, including tomatoes, capsicums and chillies, regardless of maturity. The response FAQ said the notice was in effect until 6 October 2025, subject to extension if Qfly continued to be detected. DPIRD’s announcement · DPIRD’s response FAQ

- 20 August 2025: DPIRD revoked the Willagee outbreak notice, and the WA Government announced that Qfly had been eradicated following the response. DPIRD revocation · WA Government announcement
The planned 6 October notice end date was therefore not the final outcome: the notice was revoked in August. Those dates describe the historical Willagee outbreak, not current restrictions.

Why the 2025 map is not a current compliance guide
DPIRD described a separate response following detections in Como and South Perth in information dated 21 April 2026. That page described a 1.5-kilometre Red Zone and fruit-removal requirements for that later response; it does not establish the boundary in force in October 2026. DPIRD’s Qfly information
Before moving fruit or deciding what to remove, check DPIRD’s live Qfly page and zone materials for your address and the latest directions. Do not rely on the Willagee/Palmyra map or assume that rules for the later Como/South Perth response apply to every Perth property. Report suspect Qfly through DPIRD’s official reporting channels. The applicable instructions are response-specific and may change.

Why resident compliance matters
Qfly has a broad host range: DPIRD says it attacks more than 300 species of fruits and vegetables. That figure describes potential hosts, not the number of species detected in Perth. DPIRD’s Qfly information
In its 6 December 2024 announcement, Chief Plant Biosecurity Officer Vincent Lanoiselet said: “Working together – industry, government and community – and complying with the Quarantine Area directions gives us the best chance of eradicating this pest, which could impact growers’ livelihoods and access to valuable markets.” WA Government announcement
