The treats were designed to prompt natural behaviours, not simply to mark the holiday.
What Christmas treats did Perth Zoo animals get in 2021?
Perth Zoo’s 22 December 2021 release described holiday-themed enrichment for giraffes, black-and-white ruffed lemurs and native animals. The activities varied by species:

- Tamar wallabies and a kangaroo: Two tamar wallabies and one kangaroo in the Discovery and Learning enclosure explored a Christmas tree made from woolly bush and decorated with fruit and vegetables.
- Echidna: An echidna received a Christmas present filled with favourite foods.
- Black-and-white ruffed lemurs: On the Primate Trail, lemurs sniffed out food hidden in wrapped gifts and tore into the fruit treats.
- Giraffes: In the African Savannah, giraffes received carrots from a keeper dressed as Santa. Young giraffes Akiki and Zahara were experiencing their first festive season.
Perth Zoo’s 2021 release presents these as activities from that year. They should not be read as a current event or a description of what visitors can see now.

Why were the treats part of animal enrichment?
The festive wrapping and decorations gave familiar care activities a seasonal look, while the challenges encouraged animals to investigate, forage and use other natural behaviours. Perth Zoo Senior Keeper Holly Thompson explained: “As part of our enrichment programs, we aim to engage the animal’s natural curiosity and encourage them to use their species-specific behaviours to sniff out treats or forage, hunt and tear things open.”

Food was only one tool. Thompson said keepers also introduce scents such as perfumes and herbs, or use branches from neighbouring enclosures to mentally stimulate animals. The aim is to provide variety rather than make every day the same.
As Thompson put it: “Enrichment forms an integral part of our animals’ daily lives, but it’s always extra fun to get creative over the festive season and put a festive twist on things.”

How does this fit with Perth Zoo’s other Christmas enrichment?
Perth Zoo has described festive activities in other years, but those reports concern different animals and setups—not a continuation of the 2021 event. They illustrate how a seasonal presentation can be built around broader enrichment practices.

Can pet owners copy these treats at home?
These reports do not establish that a particular zoo food, wrapping material, decoration or activity is safe for household pets. Perth Zoo’s 2019 release said pet owners can do some activities with their animals, but it did not name a suitable product or give species-specific instructions. Choose enrichment for a pet’s species, health and chewing or swallowing risks, and ask a veterinarian for advice when unsure; do not assume a zoo setup is suitable at home.
