In September 2024, Perth Zoo staff checked a cohort of numbat joeys born at the Zoo in February as the young animals began emerging from their burrows. They weighed and measured each joey and recorded its distinctive stripe pattern so carers could identify individuals later. The Zoo’s report described routine checks, not treatment for an illness.
What happened during the joeys’ health check?
The check was part of the care of young numbats from Perth Zoo’s breeding program. As they emerged from their burrows in spring, staff weighed and measured them, then documented each joey’s stripe pattern for future identification. Perth Zoo’s 22 September 2024 report does not describe diagnoses, medication or illness.

What is the numbat’s conservation status now?
The 2024 report called numbats endangered. Perth Zoo’s later update, published on 10 July 2026, says the species has since been downlisted on the IUCN Red List from Endangered to Near Threatened. That change reflects progress, but it does not mean the species is out of danger.
Perth Zoo estimates the wild population at 2,000–3,000, compared with an estimated 300 in the late 1970s. These are Zoo-reported estimates, not exact census counts; its update does not provide an independent survey method. The Zoo also says numbats occupy less than 1% of their original range and remain threatened by feral cats and foxes. Perth Zoo’s July 2026 status update calls for conservation work to continue.

How does Perth Zoo support wild numbat populations?
Breeding and release
Perth Zoo’s breeding program supports releases into the wild. The Zoo reported that 325 zoo-born numbats had been released since the program began in 1993. That cumulative figure comes from its 2026 update.
Monitoring after release
Before a planned release at Dryandra Woodland National Park in late 2025, four young zoo-born numbats were fitted with radio collars. Perth Zoo said the collars would help researchers monitor the animals’ movements and breeding activity. Those four animals were a separate group from the joeys checked in 2024. The Zoo’s November 2025 report describes those preparations.

Protecting habitat and reducing threats
Breeding and releasing animals is only one part of conservation. The Zoo’s account identifies the small share of original range still occupied and the continuing threat from introduced predators as reasons for ongoing work. It does not provide a comparative evaluation of breeding, habitat protection and predator management, so their relative effectiveness cannot be ranked from these reports.
