Secret Harbour Beach at Palermo Cove was closed on Wednesday, 26 November 2025, after a shark was reported offshore. PerthNow said it was about two metres long, roughly 200 metres from shore and sighted at 10:04am; its species was unknown. Surf Life Saving WA (SLSWA) ended patrols there for the day. This is a report of a past closure, not evidence that Secret Harbour is closed now.
What was reported at Secret Harbour
PerthNow reported on 26 November 2025 that a shark was seen at 10:04am, about 200 metres offshore from Secret Harbour Beach at Palermo Cove. The report said the beach was closed to the public and that SLSWA patrols ended for the day. It also said the closure was in place until further notice at the time of publication. It did not establish what later happened to the shark. PerthNow’s report is the source for the incident details.

The November 2025 report does not establish the beach’s present status. Shark alerts and beach closures can change, so check SharkSmart WA, Surf Life Saving WA and local authority notices before entering the water. The latest official alert page covered in the available information was updated on 1 October 2026: it described increased caution in Perth metropolitan waters and separate closures in the City Beach area. Neither notice establishes Secret Harbour’s status.

What to do if a shark is reported
- Follow beach closure signs and instructions from lifeguards or other authorities; do not enter the water at a closed beach.
- At an unpatrolled beach, SLSWA advises leaving the water if a helicopter sounds its siren and staying out for 60 minutes. Check official updates and follow any further siren instructions.
- Report a sighting to Water Police on 9442 8600. The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) says the line is staffed 24/7 and that reports may prompt a response, including a lifeguard or land-manager beach closure. DPIRD’s reporting guidance gives the instruction: “To report a shark sighting, call the Water Police on 9442 8600.”
How SLSWA describes its response thresholds
SLSWA publishes general response rules based on estimated shark size, distance from shore, whether sharks are schooling and time of day. These rules offer context, but they do not establish why officials made the specific decision at Secret Harbour in November 2025.
| Reported situation | General SLSWA response |
|---|---|
| Shark larger than three metres within one kilometre of shore | Close the beach and water one kilometre either side of the location for one hour, with longer timing at dawn or dusk. |
| Shark two to three metres, or schooling sharks, within 500 metres | Close the affected area for one hour, subject to the timing conditions in SLSWA guidance. |
| Shark under two metres | Advise the public while maintaining normal operations. |
See SLSWA’s shark-response guidance for its published thresholds and timing conditions. The Secret Harbour report’s estimate of about two metres should not be treated as an exact measurement or proof of the rationale for the closure.
