Perth Zoo announced on 8 December 2025 that a Bolivian squirrel monkey had been born to mother Vivo and father Tikan. The infant was clinging to Vivo and, according to the zoo, both were doing well. PerthNow reported the birth took place on 22 November 2025 at about 3:30 a.m.
What Perth Zoo reported about the newborn
The zoo said Vivo carried the infant on her back as she climbed through the habitat. The baby was lifting its head, and keepers described it as showing strength and curiosity. Vivo also has an older son, Inti, who was born almost two years earlier, according to the December announcement.

The infant’s sex had not been identified when the announcement was published. PerthNow quoted primate keeper Liv Paris saying keepers expected a clearer view as the baby grew more mobile and climbed on the mesh: “We won’t get a glimpse of whether it’s a boy or girl until the baby is probably about at least six weeks old, if not even older.” That describes the situation reported in December 2025, not a later update on this infant.
How the troop helps care for infants
Perth Zoo described the other females as taking natural “aunty” roles. Females Miski and Estrella began making the troop’s specialised “aunty croak” after the birth. The zoo’s species page says that in the wild, females may care for another female’s offspring, too.

Perth Zoo’s species page says infants may spend 30% of their time in the care of a mother other than their own. The zoo does not identify this as an independently verified statistic, so it is best understood as the figure presented on its species page. PerthNow quoted Paris explaining one benefit of shared care: “It really takes the pressure off the adult females, because they can play with each other rather than stirring up the adults.”
What Bolivian squirrel monkeys are like
Perth Zoo identifies the species as Saimiri boliviensis, native to rainforest habitat in the Amazon region of South America. Its species page lists an omnivorous diet that includes insects, fruit and seeds. The same page lists habitat loss, logging, agricultural land clearing and the illegal pet trade among the threats facing the species.

These are zoo-published reference figures; the page does not state a measurement method. It describes usual wild groups of 40–50 animals, with some reaching 200 or more.

The zoo’s December 2025 announcement described a managed breeding arrangement rather than the group structure it says is typical in the wild. According to Perth Zoo, wild males live on the periphery, approaching female groups and moving on. At the zoo, males and females live separately, and males are given access to the female habitat during breeding season. Staff observe the animals’ behaviour and may remove and reintroduce a male if a pairing does not work.

The December release also said two other females, Sue and Estrella, were expected to have infants soon. That was a forecast at the time, not confirmation of births in that announcement.
What later updates say about the group
In a separate announcement dated 19 February 2026, Perth Zoo reported three infants born over the preceding three months. It described the eldest as born in November, a middle infant in December and Sue’s youngest son in January. The zoo said the group then numbered 14, including the three infants, with seven females and seven males. That later group update does not, by itself, establish the sex or name of the individual newborn featured in the December announcement.
