Perth Zoo’s two Asian elephants, Permai and Putra Mas, have both moved to Monarto Safari Park in South Australia. Permai arrived in January 2025, and Putra Mas arrived on 5 November 2025, completing Monarto’s five-elephant founding herd. The Elephants of Asia precinct welcomed its first visitors in July 2026.
Why Perth Zoo moved its elephants
Perth Zoo says it announced in 2018 that it would eventually move on from keeping elephants. After the death of matriarch Tricia in 2022, Permai was the zoo’s only female elephant, and Perth Zoo said she needed female company. The zoo also said its inner-city site did not have room to appropriately care for a full herd. Monarto’s project was designed to provide a larger regional habitat and more opportunities for elephants to live socially. These are the institutions’ stated reasons for the move.

Which elephants moved, and when?
Permai and Putra Mas travelled separately from Perth to Monarto. Their journeys took roughly the same route across the Nullarbor, but the reported travel times and arrival details differ.
| Elephant | Transfer details | Arrival and settling |
|---|---|---|
| Permai, female | Left Perth Zoo on 27 January 2025. Perth Zoo reported a journey of about 2,700 kilometres and 40 hours, with her keepers and veterinary team accompanying her. | She rested in Monarto’s elephant barn as she adjusted to new sights, sounds, and smells. Keepers monitored her behaviour and began introductions with Burma through mesh. |
| Putra Mas, male | Arrived at Monarto on 5 November 2025, aged 35. Monarto reported a journey of about 2,700 kilometres and 42 hours, accompanied by keepers and veterinary staff. | His arrival completed the five-elephant founding herd. |
Monarto’s founding herd comprises Burma, Permai, Pak Boon, Tang Mo, and Putra Mas. Burma came from Auckland Zoo; Pak Boon and Tang Mo came from Taronga Zoo.

How the transfers were prepared and carried out
Perth Zoo says staff gradually trained the elephants to enter transport crates, beginning with a borrowed Taronga crate and later using custom-built crates. According to the zoo, the crates were insulated and air-conditioned, with temperature gauges and cameras. It reported that the elephants entered voluntarily and were tethered for safety, and that keepers and veterinary staff accompanied the journeys.
These are procedures reported by the institutions involved, not an independent assessment of the elephants’ stress or welfare outcomes. The sources cited do not give a separate quantitative measure of transport stress.

How the elephants are settling into the herd
Permai’s first meeting with Burma took place through mesh. Monarto’s report described curiosity and gentle behaviour from both elephants. The park has said it is building companionship gradually, allowing time and choice to guide introductions. As Monarto Elephant Manager Andrew Coers put it in a 2024 announcement, “it’s up to the elephants to decide who they want to spend time with and how strong those relationships will be.”
When Putra Mas arrived in November 2025, Monarto said the immediate focus was building trust and companionship in a positive welfare environment.

Can visitors see the elephants at Monarto?
Monarto Safari Park’s Elephants of Asia precinct welcomed its first visitors in July 2026. The park says guests may reach the habitat via walking tracks or the Zu-loop bus, and its program FAQ says admission can be pre-booked. Check Monarto’s official Elephants of Asia visitor information for current access and ticketing details, which can change.
Visitors should not count on seeing a particular elephant. Monarto says the animals can choose whether to use habitat, barn, or off-habitat areas, so visibility depends on where they choose to spend their time.

Will the elephants breed at Monarto?
Monarto’s November 2025 announcement said the immediate priority was trust, companionship, and a positive welfare environment. Its FAQ at that time said it was not then exploring breeding opportunities and that future direction would be left to the regional species management program. That is the park’s dated November 2025 position, not a guarantee of a permanent policy or a newly confirmed 2026 plan.
