Artificial hollows can help in suitable places, but need expert siting and ongoing care. If you find an injured bird, contact a wildlife rescue service and follow its instructions.
Why Carnaby’s cockatoos need help
Carnaby’s cockatoo (also called Carnaby’s black cockatoo) is an endangered species endemic to south-west Western Australia. It needs both feeding habitat and breeding habitat, which can be separated by fragmented landscapes. When food is far from nesting sites, breeding birds may have to travel farther to feed.

Habitat loss is a central pressure. The Australian Government species profile reports that 87% of the species’ habitat in the WA Wheatbelt has been lost; the profile does not give a separate year for that estimate. Clearing and fragmentation reduce food sources, nesting opportunities and the links between them. Other pressures identified by the Government include too few large trees with hollows, vehicle collisions, inappropriate fire regimes, and climate-related fire, drought and reduced food-plant productivity. What you can do at home or on your land
Protect existing habitat and old trees
Retaining existing native vegetation is immediate habitat protection; new plantings take time to become useful. Avoid clearing or damaging bushland, and encourage property owners and land managers to retain it. Large old trees—alive or dead—can contain nesting hollows that take a long time to form. Keep them where safe and legally appropriate. Do not enter or interfere with hollows, or try to remove wildlife or other animals using them; report concerns to the relevant land manager or authority.
Plant food plants suited to your location
Planting native shrubs and trees can add feeding habitat, particularly when it contributes to a connected restoration effort. There is no single plant list that is right for every garden in Western Australia: species, local conditions and provenance matter. Ask a local native nursery, Landcare or natural resource management (NRM) group for advice, and source plants responsibly. Native Banksia seedlings may be one option where locally suitable, not a universal recommendation.

For people in the Perth–Peel region, check whether the Corridors for Carnaby’s project is currently offering ways to take part. A University of Western Australia announcement dated 10 June 2026 described plans to distribute about 2,000 fast-growing nut trees to Perth residents. That was a project-specific offer and target, not evidence that distribution is still open or that every tree suits every garden. UWA: Corridors for Carnaby’s announcement, 10 June 2026
Do not install an artificial hollow casually
Artificial hollows can support breeding where natural hollows are limited, but they are a targeted intervention rather than a replacement for habitat protection. The WA Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) guidance covers site choice, design, placement, monitoring and maintenance. It is based on Carnaby’s cockatoo, for which successful use has been documented; evidence differs for other black cockatoo species. Follow the guidance and arrange ongoing monitoring and maintenance, and report installations and monitoring to the register. DBCA: Artificial hollows for black cockatoos

How to help through your community
Volunteer with habitat restoration
Join a local tree-planting, bushland-restoration, Landcare or NRM group. Coordinated work can protect or rebuild habitat across larger areas than a single garden. The Australian Government lists projects involving community groups, land managers and First Nations ranger teams, including planting food species, improving nesting habitat, weed control and habitat revegetation. Check its profile for current project status and local participation opportunities. Australian Government: Carnaby’s cockatoo species profile and conservation projects
Take part in monitoring
When registrations are open, consider joining BirdLife Australia’s Great Cocky Count. The Australian Government describes it as an annual citizen-science survey operating since 2010 that provides a minimum count for Greater Peel–Perth. It contributes monitoring data; it is not a complete population census. Check BirdLife Australia for current dates and registration information.

Report habitat concerns; do not intervene yourself
If you notice a potential problem with a nesting hollow or a competing species, report it to the relevant local conservation or government channel. The City of Greater Geraldton advises reporting pest species competing for hollows. Do not attempt to remove bees, displace wildlife or alter a hollow yourself. City of Greater Geraldton: Carnaby’s cockatoo information sheet
Support reputable rescue and conservation work
Before donating, check an organisation’s current programs and donation information so you know what your support funds. The Australian Government identifies Kaarakin as a not-for-profit wildlife rescue and lists BirdLife Australia and NRM groups among conservation actors. Joining a practical local project is another way to contribute.

What a large-scale habitat project can—and cannot—do
Corridors for Carnaby’s is a University of Western Australia project announced on 10 June 2026 to establish connected habitat near Mandurah. The announcement described a three-year project with $3.3 million in funding and targets of 200,000 Banksia plantings along a 10 km corridor, 50 artificial nests, 20 self-cleaning solar water stations, and tree planting with 12 schools. These are announced plans and targets, not confirmed completed outcomes. UWA: Corridors for Carnaby’s announcement, 10 June 2026
Project lead Professor Kingsley Dixon said: “We estimate that if just one per cent of home gardeners along the corridor plant a tree in support of the project, the tide could be turned on famine for the Carnaby’s.” This is Dixon’s estimate about the project, not an independently measured result.
The project demonstrates how gardens can add to landscape-scale planting, but garden trees alone cannot resolve habitat loss. Protecting existing feeding and nesting habitat remains essential while restoration and corridor plantings grow.

Quick Recap
What to do if you find a sick or injured bird
- Keep a safe distance and do not attempt treatment or handling unless a wildlife rescue service instructs you to do so.
- Contact a wildlife rescue service serving the place where the bird was found, and follow its directions. The City of Greater Geraldton lists Kaarakin and the WA Wildcare Helpline; check the live contact details and local coverage before relying on them.
- Give the service the bird’s location and describe what you observed, then follow its advice while help is arranged.
Choose actions that match what you can do
| Action | What it contributes | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Retain existing native vegetation and large hollow-bearing trees | Protects feeding or breeding habitat already present. | Keep old trees where safe and legally appropriate; do not disturb hollows. |
| Plant locally appropriate native food plants | Adds future feeding habitat and can support connected restoration. | Get local advice; new plantings take time to mature, and one species or seed source will not suit every location. |
| Volunteer with restoration or landcare | Contributes to coordinated habitat work over a wider area. | Look for an active local group or current project opportunity. |
| Join a cockatoo count | Adds observations to monitoring. | The Great Cocky Count is a minimum count for Greater Peel–Perth, not a full census; check whether registration is open. |
| Support artificial hollows | Can provide nesting opportunities where natural hollows are limited. | Use DBCA guidance and plan for monitoring and maintenance. |
| Contact wildlife rescue about an injured bird | Gets the bird assessed by people with relevant expertise. | Use a service covering the location and follow its instructions rather than treating the bird yourself. |
