ASPCA lists the plants below as non-toxic to cats, but that does not mean they are safe to eat or guaranteed to cause no symptoms. ASPCA’s cat-specific list names ten examples here; it does not support presenting 21 plants as individually tested or veterinarian-approved. Use each scientific name to identify a plant, and contact a veterinarian promptly if your cat eats a plant and may be at risk.

What “safe for cats” means

ASPCA’s cat-specific toxic and non-toxic plant list classifies plants by their potential toxicity to cats. The plants below are listed as non-toxic to cats by ASPCA; the classification is not a guarantee that chewing or swallowing them is harmless. ASPCA cautions that eating any plant material may cause vomiting or gastrointestinal upset, and notes that its list is not all-inclusive.

The assignment’s “Vet Approved” wording should not be read as evidence that an individual veterinarian tested or endorsed every plant. The source here is ASPCA’s plant list, not a set of veterinary trials. Common names can also refer to different plants, so confirm the scientific name rather than relying on a store label or appearance.

Before bringing home a plant, match its botanical identity to the current cat-specific listing. ASPCA warns that plants may look different from the images or descriptions on its list, and that the list is not exhaustive.

Keep true lilies and daylilies away from cats

Do not confuse a plant’s common name with its botanical identity. True lilies in the Lilium group and daylilies in the Hemerocallis group are serious hazards to cats. ASPCA warns that even small pollen exposures can cause kidney failure or death, and advises keeping these flowers out of the home and checking bouquets carefully. A different plant with “lily” in its common name is not thereby a true lily; verify the scientific name.

What to do if your cat chews a plant

If you know or suspect your cat has eaten a potentially toxic plant, or your cat appears ill after contact with any plant, promptly contact a local veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control, as directed by ASPCA’s plant guidance. Identify the plant by its scientific name if possible. Do not treat a non-toxic listing as a reason to delay getting advice when symptoms or a possible toxic exposure are involved.
