Rehoming a Cat: Everything You Need to Know

Thinking about rehoming your cat? Check whether the problem can be fixed first, then compare rescue and direct placement and plan a safe handover.

Rehoming a cat is sometimes the responsible choice, but it should follow a short check of whether the problem can be solved. If you do need to rehome, you have two realistic routes: an organization-run rehoming process or a carefully managed direct placement with a new adopter. Either one goes better when you start early, describe your cat accurately, and plan the handover rather than making it at the last minute.

Best Friends Animal Society, a US animal welfare organization, puts it this way: “Rehoming a pet is often the most responsible choice a family can make when they find themselves unable to care for their pet.” The key word is when. The sections below explain how to tell whether that point has been reached, how each route works, and what to do if the cat you are dealing with was found rather than owned.

Step one: check whether the problem can be solved

Many people consider giving up a cat because of a problem that has a practical fix. Cats Protection, a UK charity, lists high costs, behavior problems, moving, allergies, family changes, and difficulty settling a cat in as the most common reasons people raise the subject. Its guidance (Cats Protection, “Thinking About Giving Up A Cat”) recommends exploring support before making a final decision.

Behavior changes may have a medical cause

A sudden change in behavior can reflect pain, illness, or stress. Aggression, reduced tolerance of being handled, and toileting outside the litter tray are the changes Cats Protection specifically flags for veterinary advice. Book a vet visit before you treat the behavior as a reason to rehome. If the cause turns out to be medical, the problem may resolve with treatment; if it is stress-related, a behavior specialist may help.

  • Fits for under-seat dimensions of most airlines. Every airline has a specific set of rules and regulations, please contact with airline before flying with your cats small dogs.

  • "Toys for pets, of textile materials". Mostly used as a Toy of Fabric Pet Home for pets playing and relaxing.

Money, housing, and allergies

  • Costs: Cats Protection says charities may help with neutering costs, and that a vet payment plan or support from organizations such as PDSA or Blue Cross may be available. Ask your vet about payment options before assuming care is unaffordable.
  • Moving or a new rental: Look at pet-friendly housing and pet-friendly travel options first. The Cats Protection page includes renter guidance specific to England. It does not describe law across the whole UK, so check the rules where you live.
  • Allergies: Cats Protection advises seeing a GP, because the trigger may not be the cat alone and symptom-management options may exist.

Temporary problems and alternatives

If the difficulty is time-limited, such as a hospital stay, a short work placement, or a family crisis, a trusted caregiver or a temporary foster may keep the cat in its home. Best Friends Animal Society also suggests behavior support, pet-food assistance, and temporary fostering as alternatives worth exploring (Best Friends, “How to rehome a pet without going through a shelter”).

Some situations genuinely cannot be fixed. Best Friends recognizes that a changed living situation, health problems, or financial strain can make rehoming the responsible option when they affect the animal’s care and well-being. If you have worked through the options above and the cat’s needs still cannot be met, move on to the routes below.

Choosing a route: rescue or direct placement

There are two main routes. Compare them on the points that matter most for your cat:

Rank #2

Comparison point Organization-assisted rehoming (rescue or shelter) Direct placement with a new adopter
Who screens adopters and matches the cat The organization You, so you carry the screening work
Space and timing Depends on capacity; Cats Protection warns that places in its care may have waiting lists Depends on finding a suitable adopter; no timeline is established by the cited guidance
Information and work for the owner A prepared history, an intake appointment, and transport to the center or a volunteer fosterer An honest profile, adopter screening, arranged meetings, and handover paperwork
Vetting and documentation Handled by the organization’s intake process, which includes veterinary checks Your responsibility, supported by records and an optional adoption contract
Fees Not stated in the cited Cats Protection guidance Optional rehoming fee, per Best Friends; amounts vary and no legal rule is established
Owner’s new address or contact Cats Protection does not disclose a rehomed cat’s new owner or location Known to you and the adopter

Neither route is universally faster or safer. A rescue removes the screening burden but may not have space when you need it. A direct placement can happen on your timetable, but only the screening you do protects the cat.

Route A: rehome through a rescue or shelter

Contact the organization early

Cats Protection says it is best to plan early. Contact your local organization and ask four things: whether you are eligible, when intake can happen, what to bring, and what the procedure is. Procedures and capacity vary between organizations, so do not assume one center’s process applies elsewhere.

Cats Protection’s process typically involves discussing your options, booking an appointment, and, depending on the organization, bringing the cat to a center or a volunteer fosterer.

Prepare an accurate cat profile

Write down what you know before the appointment:

  • Previous experience of the cat, including where it came from and how long you have had it
  • Temperament, including how it reacts to strangers, children, and other animals
  • Diet and any food sensitivities
  • Medical conditions, medications, and vaccination history
  • Any other needs, such as litter habits or handling tolerance

Cats Protection says this information supports both the cat’s care and the matching process. Accuracy matters more than a flattering account: an organization can plan for a cat it knows about, but an undisclosed behavior problem can put the cat, staff, and a future home at risk.

What to bring

  1. Carrier: Use a secure, ventilated carrier. Cats Protection asks owners to use a suitable carrier for intake. A blanket or towel over it is acceptable as long as ventilation stays clear.
  2. Familiar items: Favorite toys or blankets carry familiar scents and can help a nervous cat settle.
  3. Records: Bring any medical records and a list of medications, if you have them.

What to expect at the organization

Cats Protection describes its own care as including a secure space and veterinary checks, with neutering, vaccination, and microchipping arranged if these have not already been done. This describes Cats Protection specifically. Other rescues may differ, and not every cat will be accepted. Ask what the organization provides before you hand the cat over.

Route B: direct placement with a new adopter

Write a truthful listing

A direct placement starts with a clear, honest profile. Include a good photo, the cat’s age and appearance, its personality, whether it is neutered, its medical and behavior needs, and the kind of home that suits it.

Best Friends Animal Society suggests sharing the listing through trusted networks, local community groups, or a direct-rehoming platform. It names Rehome by Adopt a Pet and Home To Home as free platforms (Best Friends, “Rehoming a Pet: Finding a Good New Home”). Listing on any platform is still your responsibility, so read its terms before posting.

Screen for fit, not just interest

  1. Ask about experience and household. Find out what the adopter has owned before, who lives in the home, and whether there are other animals or young children.
  2. Ask where the cat will live. Confirm the home allows animals and the cat will have a safe, settled space.
  3. Ask how ongoing needs will be met. Cover food, vet care, litter, and what happens if the adopter’s circumstances change.
  4. Be candid. Describe the cat’s behavior, health, diet, and how it behaves with children or other pets, including any adjustment needs.
  5. Meet in person and observe. Watch how the adopter and cat interact before agreeing to anything.

Expect the cat to need time. Best Friends notes that pets may need weeks to months to adjust to a new home. This is a general possibility, not a schedule that applies to every cat.

Document the handover

If both parties go ahead, an adoption contract can record the transfer. Hand over:

Best Friends describes an optional rehoming fee. It can help offset veterinary costs and signal commitment. The guidance does not establish a standard amount or any legal requirement for a fee, so set one that is reasonable for your situation and check local rules if you are unsure.

If the cat was found, not owned

Do not treat a found cat as available for adoption until you have checked whether it has an owner. Best Friends Animal Society advises the following, in this order:

  1. Check for identification. Look for a collar or tag, then arrange a microchip scan through a vet or shelter.
  2. Notify local animal services. Requirements differ by area. Some places require you to report a found animal or to follow a set process for surrender.
  3. Make reasonable efforts to find the owner. Use local lost-and-found listings and community channels.
  4. Confirm local obligations before you rehome. Only after these steps should you consider placing the cat with a new home.

What to avoid

Do not abandon a cat or advertise it for free online as a quick fix. Cats Protection warns that this can be dangerous for the animal, and recommends contacting it for urgent advice. If you face an immediate emergency, the options available depend on local organizations and their current capacity, so call your nearest rescue or animal services office first.

Preparing for the day of handover

Whichever route you take, have these ready in advance: a secure, ventilated carrier; records; a food supply and familiar bedding; and a written note of the cat’s routine, including feeding times, litter preferences, and any medications. These are practical items for the transition, not product recommendations, and the carrier is the only physical item the cited guidance treats as essential.
