In early 2024, visitors to Rottnest Island began sharing photos with a duck they called Neville. The name caught on in island Facebook groups, but a PerthNow report published on 2 February 2024 said the bird’s origins and individual identity were not officially known. Neville was identified in the report as an Australian shelduck, also called an Australian mountain duck—not a quokka.
Who was Neville the duck?
Neville was the informal name visitors used for a duck that became a photo subject on Rottnest Island. PerthNow reported that pictures and anecdotes showed the bird landing on boats, visiting accommodation and joining people at the beach. The report did not establish that every photo showed the same individual, so the nickname should not be treated as a confirmed identity.

The story described Neville’s popularity as a visitor and social-media phenomenon, with images shared in two Rottnest Island Facebook groups. Their combined membership was reported as more than 70,000; that figure is group membership, not a count of unique people, visitors, posts or Neville photographs. The report did not give a selfie total or a survey measuring the trend.

PerthNow identified the bird as an Australian shelduck, also known as an Australian mountain duck. The report gives guraga as the Noongar term. Australian shelducks frequent Rottnest’s salt lakes to feed on brine shrimp, according to the article.

The name Neville and the bird’s origins were not officially established in the report. That means an account of how this particular duck came to the island—or claims that he was hand-reared—should be understood as unconfirmed rather than fact.
Did Neville replace Rottnest’s quokka selfies?
No evidence in the report shows that quokka photos stopped. Its “Quokka selfies are so 2023” framing captured the novelty of a duck becoming a sought-after photo subject, not a measured end to Rottnest’s famous quokka encounters. Visitor Quyen Truong described a picture with the duck as “more exclusive getting a selfie with him than a quokka,” a personal reaction rather than an official assessment.

How to photograph Rottnest wildlife responsibly
A popular photo opportunity is not a reason to crowd or pursue an animal. Rottnest Island’s quokka spotting guidance says quokkas are vulnerable and asks visitors to observe quietly and give them plenty of space. It notes that early morning and late afternoon are good times to spot them because they are nocturnal.
