RSPCA WA’s invitation to “gush about your fur-baby” was the friendly face of a short survey about pet ownership, spending and housing—not a request to sign up for ongoing census participation. The 2024 Pet Census closed in February, and RSPCA WA published responses from 1,643 animal owners in April. The findings highlighted rising costs of care and difficulty finding pet-friendly rentals, while giving the organisation information to guide community work and housing advocacy.
What was RSPCA WA’s 2024 Pet Census?
RSPCA WA launched the survey in January 2024 for Western Australian pet owners. PerthNow described it as a questionnaire taking about 10 minutes, open until 16 February 2024. It asked about owners’ animals, time spent with them and annual spending. The playful invitation to “gush about their fur-babies” sat alongside practical questions about the pressures of keeping pets.

RSPCA WA said it wanted responses to help identify where community outreach was needed and to support advocacy for affordable pet-friendly housing. The organisation’s launch announcement pointed to its earlier finding that around half of renting respondents had struggled to find pet-friendly housing, and said it wanted updated information.

What did the 2024 survey respondents report?
RSPCA WA said 1,643 animal owners completed the census. The figures below describe those respondents’ answers; they should not be read as estimates for every pet owner in Western Australia. The results release identifies the number of respondents but does not state a sampling or weighting method.
| Survey topic | What respondents reported |
|---|---|
| Annual pet spending | 45% spent $1,000–$3,000; 26% spent $3,000–$5,000; 17% spent more than $5,000. |
| Rising costs in the previous 12 months | 78% had noticed pet-food costs rise; 58% had noticed veterinary-care costs rise. |
| Adjustments to household spending or care | 34% were spending less on themselves to afford pet food and general care items; 14% were taking their pets to the vet less frequently. |
| Pet-friendly rentals | 18% had struggled to find a pet-friendly rental in the previous 12 months but eventually found one. RSPCA WA also reported that 20 respondents had surrendered animals to find housing. |
RSPCA WA Shelter Manager Emily Farrell said in the results release that rising pet-care costs were affecting people despite their love for their animals. The responses connect that pressure to practical choices, including cutting personal spending or delaying veterinary visits.

How do the results relate to RSPCA WA’s earlier census?
RSPCA WA’s first pet census was completed by 1,148 animal owners late in 2022, with results published in January 2023. The organisation reported that around half of renting respondents had struggled to find pet-friendly housing and about 1% had surrendered a pet for that reason. In its January 2024 announcement, RSPCA WA also recalled earlier findings that 70% celebrated their pet’s birthday and more than half considered their pets their “babies.” Those are earlier-survey findings, not results from the 2024 questionnaire.

The Pet Census gathered information for RSPCA WA’s community work and advocacy. It was not itself a financial-aid program, a rental-placement service or a pet-care product recommendation. A respondent’s answer also does not establish that a particular support service is available or that they qualify for assistance.
