Rover’s separate top-trending breed is the Mexican Hairless Dog, also called the Xolo. Those are different measures, and neither ranking is a census of every dog living in the city.
What Rover’s San Diego ranking says
Rover ranks the Golden Retriever first by total volume in its San Diego city data. The data are described as current to August 2026 and come from breed information submitted by Rover users. Rover says its city rankings draw on submissions from millions of pet parents, but it does not publish an exact San Diego sample count or an uncertainty estimate. The result is best read as Rover’s platform-specific ranking, not a definitive count of all San Diego dogs. Rover’s 2026 city guide
Most popular and fastest-trending are not the same
Rover names the Mexican Hairless Dog (Xolo) as San Diego’s top-trending breed. Its trend measure is year-over-year growth, and Rover requires at least 10 new pets added in 2026 for a breed to qualify. That makes the Xolo the report’s growth leader—not the breed with the largest total volume. Rover’s methodology and 2026 report details
Why another ranking puts French Bulldogs first
The American Kennel Club’s 2025 San Diego ranking puts French Bulldogs first and Golden Retrievers second. The AKC bases its list on its registration numbers, while Rover uses user-submitted platform data and reports city data as of August 2026. They measure different populations over different periods, so their rankings need not match—and neither list establishes the exact breed distribution among all dogs in San Diego.

San Diego’s dog-walking score
In a separate 2026 Rover and Redfin dog-walking guide, San Diego ranks 31st among 107 cities, with a Walk Score of 53.3. Rover labels its city archetype “The Busy Pet Parent’s Dog.” This is a walkability-related ranking, not evidence about which breed is most common. Rover and Redfin’s dog-walking guide

A citywide popularity list cannot tell you whether a particular neighborhood or home suits a particular dog. Rover Pet People Panelist and certified professional trainer Nicole Ellis recommends considering a dog’s activity level, social preferences, and preferred enrichment when evaluating a living environment. Those individual needs matter more to a dog’s daily routine than a city ranking alone. Rover’s 2026 report
