The French Bulldog is America’s most popular dog breed in the American Kennel Club’s 2025 ranking, which is based on AKC registrations. It has held the top spot for four consecutive years. The Labrador Retriever’s 31-year run at No. 1 ended when the French Bulldog moved ahead in 2022.
What is the most popular dog breed in America?
By the AKC’s annual U.S. breed-registration ranking, it is the French Bulldog. The AKC’s 2025 list covers 202 breeds and places the French Bulldog first for the fourth year in a row. The AKC announced the result and published its 2025 breed ranking.
That answer needs a qualifier: “most popular” means the breed with the most registrations in the AKC’s dataset, not the most common dog among every dog living in the United States. AKC registration is voluntary, and the ranking does not count the full population of mixed-breed dogs or hybrids such as goldendoodles and Pomskies, as the Associated Press explains.
Which dog breed replaced the Labrador as America’s favorite?
The French Bulldog replaced the Labrador Retriever at the top of the AKC ranking in 2022, ending the Labrador’s 31-year reign. The French Bulldog has remained No. 1 in each AKC list since then, including the 2025 ranking.

What are the AKC’s top five dog breeds for 2025?
| 2025 rank | Breed |
|---|---|
| 1 | French Bulldog |
| 2 | Labrador Retriever |
| 3 | Golden Retriever |
| 4 | German Shepherd Dog |
| 5 | Dachshund |
The AKC’s 2025 ranking also notes a rise for Dachshunds: they moved from No. 6 in 2024 to No. 5 in 2025, their highest position since 2003.
Why do some rankings still put Labradors first?
Different rankings measure different populations. In August 2025, Axios reported that a U.S. News analysis based on pet-insurance data ranked Labradors first and French Bulldogs sixth. That result does not contradict the AKC list: insurance data is not AKC registration data, and neither dataset is a complete census of all U.S. dogs. Axios also noted that U.S. News grouped Labs of all colors together in its 2025 category, after separating black Labs and other Labs in the prior year.

Does the ranking mean you should get a French Bulldog?
No. A breed’s ranking is not a recommendation or a measure of whether it will suit a particular household. AKC President and CEO Gina M. DiNardo said, “Popularity does not mean it’s right for everyone,” and urged prospective owners to research breed fit and seek a well-bred dog from a responsible breeder. The AKC says its rankings are intended to satisfy public curiosity, not encourage people to buy any particular type of dog, according to the Associated Press.
