Monte, a stray dog, approached a couple repairing their bicycles during a cycling trip, then followed them for miles and stayed outside their tent overnight, according to an August 2023 account by Julie Hunt for iHeartDogs. The couple eventually took her in, arranged veterinary care and a foster stay, and reunited with her for more travels.
Why did the stray dog follow the cyclists?
In Hunt’s account, the couple had already encountered other stray dogs on their cycling trip. Monte stood out because she approached them while they were maintaining their bicycles and seemed to want affection. The article says she followed them on their bikes for miles. Its headline uses “chases,” but the narrative describes her following them.
That night, Monte stayed outside the couple’s tent. After seeing her persistently stick with them, they decided to find out whether they could bring her along.
What happened to Monte after she followed them?
The account says Monte had fleas and ticks, so the couple took her to a veterinarian. The vet recommended spaying. The couple arranged for her to stay with a foster while she recovered, then continued their trip; the article describes the recovery and foster period as a month.

When the foster period ended, the couple reunited with Monte. The account does not name the veterinarian or foster, or provide veterinary records.
How did Monte travel with the couple?
After reuniting, the couple gradually helped Monte get used to a crate attached to their bicycles. The article gives no brand or model for the crate, and does not describe its specifications. It says Monte was initially nervous but later joined the couple’s adventures, including a kayaking stop at a lake in Verpazar.

Hunt’s account says the couple eventually returned to the United States with Monte. Their routine became more settled, and Monte adjusted to life at home; she developed a fondness for stuffed animals.
The cyclists are not named in the account, and it does not give the trip’s date or exact route. It also does not provide a verifiable update on Monte after the story was published on August 28, 2023. The details here reflect that secondary account rather than independently confirmed interviews or records.
