In March 2019, a 10-week-old puppy named Teddy was stolen from a backyard in Swanbourne, Perth. His owner, Glenn Murray, raised the family’s reward from $10,000 to $20,000 while Teddy was missing, after security-camera footage captured a hooded figure carrying him. Teddy was found in Armadale the next day and returned to his family after a veterinary check.
What happened to Teddy?
PerthNow reported on 4 April 2019 that Teddy, a poodle and cocker spaniel cross, was taken from the Murray family’s Swanbourne backyard early on the preceding Friday. Security-camera footage shared by the family showed a hooded figure carrying the puppy away. PerthNow’s report said the family had received no response to its initial reward offer by the time it was published.

Why did the family raise the reward to $20,000?
Murray initially offered $10,000 for information about Teddy’s whereabouts, then increased the reward to $20,000 while Teddy remained missing. He said he feared for the puppy’s safety. He also described the pet microchip system as fragmented and said the family wanted to make a point about the value of a centralized national database. That was Murray’s view as quoted in 2019, not an independently established assessment of Australian microchip databases.
Murray also said Teddy had not yet been vaccinated and expressed concern about parvovirus. This was the owner’s reported worry; the news report does not establish Teddy’s individual medical risk or provide veterinary guidance.

Was Teddy found, and what happened afterward?
Yes. The West Australian reported on 5 April 2019 that a member of the public contacted CrimeStoppers, leading police to Teddy at a property in Armadale on Thursday night. He received a veterinary check and returned home late that night. The West Australian’s follow-up said a 39-year-old Armadale man had been charged with stealing the puppy and was due to appear in Perth Magistrates Court on 30 April.
Who stole the Swanbourne puppy?
A 30 April 2019 follow-up reported that Mark James Dunks pleaded guilty to stealing Teddy. The reporting establishes the guilty plea, but the available accounts do not establish the eventual sentence. The West Australian’s court report also recounted the family’s increase from a $10,000 offer to $20,000.
