- Call Triple Zero. Do this immediately for a suspected bite; do not wait for symptoms to appear.
- Keep the person still. Reassure them and minimise movement while emergency help is arranged.
- Apply a pressure immobilisation bandage to the bitten limb. Splint the limb if possible. If a dedicated bandage is unavailable, Ambulance Victoria says a firmly applied regular bandage or clothing at least 10–15 cm wide can be used.
- Leave the bandage in place. Keep it on until the person reaches hospital, and do not wash the bite site. Ambulance Victoria says venom left on the skin may help identify the snake and the antivenom required.
These are Ambulance Victoria’s instructions for Victoria; call emergency services and follow their advice rather than trying to manage a suspected bite without medical care.

How can you avoid a snake encounter?
Victoria’s Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action advises people to leave snakes alone, avoid trying to capture or kill them, and keep dogs on leads when walking. Its Senior Wildlife Projects Officer, Abby Smith, said most snake bites happen when people try to capture or kill snakes, which may defend themselves when threatened. If a snake needs to be removed, Victorian government guidance is to contact a licensed snake catcher.
